Motson’s just said in his usual excessively intrigued tone that Portsmouth have just finished 8th in the Premiership, “their highest ever finish”. While technically correct, this completely obscures the fact that they have twice been league champions within living memory. This adulation for all things Premiership really goes too far sometimes, especially on a day when it is a completely different competition being played for, and 50% of the participants do not even play in it.

I agree - it’s really just a useful tool for statisticians to come up with ever more meaningless soundbites, such as this one. I think Motson has had his day as a commentator, really - his style is quite annoying, though at least he’s not as bad as Tony Gubba.

Agree that the premiership year zero is annoying bullshit. Davie Moyes says this a lot, which I don’t care for - ‘our highest ever premiership points tally (65) this year’. I get the point, Davie, we were shite for a number of years before you turned up. But go back a bit further and we’ve had great teams that would piss all over your current first eleven, so a bit of perspective is in order.
No, but I count living memory as including things that happened only 60 years ago, even if I wasn’t born then myself
