Well, in my effort to get out there and do something (e.g. not sit at home in my underwear watching Lost all day), I thought it might be fun to try my hand at tennis - a sport I’ve sorta been interested in for a few years.
Anyway, I found a local group instructor who charges $100 for four lessons - one hour a week for four weeks. Is that a good price?
Oh, and any other tips/advise I should know about tennis?
Racquet back, bend your knees,
That will be $10, please!
Seriously, not a bad price, but you might want to think about group lessons, which will be cheaper per lesson and also give you people at the same level to play with (for free) as it gets expensive playing with a pro all the time.
When you get better, try to play with people who are somewhat better than you at least part of the time, to help you raise your game.
I was lucky - growing up in my small hometown in Illinois, we had free tennis lessons in the summer, plus we even had tennis as one of the sports mandatory to learn in high school.
Not that I was good, but I certainly learned the correct way to play and knew exactly why I would never be very good at it…you run more on a tennis court than any marathon runner ever does! Even as a kid, after about two sets I was worn to a frazzle. It looks so easy when you watch them play on television.
$25 an hour, if it is a small group, doesn’t sound all that outrageous - but first look around and see if the local YMCA or whatever offers free, or less expensive, courses. As a beginner, you need to just learn the basics and then, if you like it, spend the money to get a tennis pro to help you perfect your game.
