Is 88 cents/lb for pork shoulder a great price?

I picked up a 9 lb bone in pork shoulder at the store today for only 88 cents/lb. I couldn’t pass it up even though I wont be smoking it for quite a while. $8 for a 9 lb roast, seems like I got a great deal but I’m not a very savvy shopper.

Was this a good price or was I duped?

That’s a pretty good price. Go back and buy a few for the freezer.

I bought this one for the freezer. If I had a chest freezer I would have bought a couple more at that price.

Best price I’ve ever seen.

Buy another one for the Crock Pot, then! Not quite as good as a smoked one, of course, but still nummy.

And yeah, that’s a darn good price. I may have to go check locally and see if it’s as low around here right now.

Yeah, wow. I thought I was getting a great price for pork loin at $1.99/#.

It’s not quite as good a deal as it looks, since you’re paying for the bone, too. But even accounting for that, it’s still a very good price. $3 a pound is a perfectly reasonable price for meat, and $2 is already starting to look pretty good. Plus, a whole big cut of meat tends to be more expensive than something processed like ground beef or sausage.

Iowa checking in here. I consider .99 a good price per pound for bone-in butts. If you can get a shoulder for .89, do what I did when I found spare ribs for $1 per pound, fill the freezer and borrow space from the neighbor to do the same.

If you are smoking it, the bone is an asset, not an expense.

For comparison, Dominick’s has pork shoulder *steaks *right now, advertised in their weekly circular (meaning it’s probably a loss leader) for $2.69/lb. Not quite the same thing, but closest product I can find the price of online.

Jewel has pork shoulder roast, also advertised, for $1.99/lb.

(Dominick’s and Jewel are the two largest supermarket chains in Chicagoland.)

Kroger’s website sucks and won’t work for me right now, so no free advertising for them! :stuck_out_tongue:

Cermak Freshmarket, where I go to get my cheapest meats and produce, is advertising pork shoulder roast (doesn’t specify bone in or boneless, and I can’t tell from the picture) for $0.99/lb right now. Woo-hoo! Goin’ to Cermak tomorrow!

This is why i was so jazzed. These are 9 lb single chunk shoulders with a nice fat layer on top. There were only 4 there when I got mine. Wish I had somewhere to keep the others because these were cheap as he’ll!

Yeah, they usually go on sale for .99 a pound around here. So you saved a buck!

My husband likes to smoke pork shoulders, and he says that there is usually a 40% yield by weight… that is, 10-lb shoulder will provide 4 pounds of edible meat. Just to help you compare the price

That’s a very, very good price.

In the Chicagoland area, bone-in pork shoulder (Boston butt) is usually at around $1.49-$1.59/lb these days. It’ll range as high as $1.99/lb and the lowest I’ve seen (last week) at $0.99/lb. $0.89/lb is an exceptionally good price. I haven’t seen shoulder at $0.89/lb or under for at least a year or two.

If you happen to be in the Chicagoland area (just hoping based on your screenname), can you tell me where you found it?

I just bought one for 1.19/lb, you did good.

<snicker>

Yeah, it ranks up there with titmouse.

I am in the heart of Boston Butt country. Normal price at our store is $1.99/lb (bone in). Once a month or so they put them on sale for $0.99/lb. So yes, $0.88 is a pretty good deal, though not unheard of.

Pretty good price. I think I paid .99/lb about a year and half ago. Most pork shoulders will end up going to processed food manufacturers, who won’t pay too much for them, so meat distributors will offer them to retailers at reasonable prices when they are over stocked.

Still, finding any meat for under $1.00/lb is tough to do these days. And pulled pork is fabulous food.
