Is a 'critique my resume' thread OK?

In order to help me in my job search, I would like to enlist the help of the good folks at the SDMB. In short, I would like to put my resume up on a site, post a link to it and have people critique my reusme and provide helpful comments.

My address and present employer information will be masked. It would have my real name (since I post with my real name anyway…)

I don’t think this sort of thread would be Really Bad[sup]TM[/sup], but I just wanted to check with the admins before I do something that could be seen as self-promotional.

So, mods, is it OK?

Not a mod, nor do I play one on tv, but I ask myself these questions: What if every SDMB’er in the job market did it?

Beyond your potential personal gain, what could the SDMB hope to gain from this exercise?

Tough call and nothing personal but it seems not to be of general interest and particularly self-serving, IMHO.

But I’m still not worthy of carrying your sandals. No joke.

Well, whatever resume tips I get could be applicable to everyone else…

Granted, it’s self-serving. I know the job market isn’t great, but I’ve only had two interviews in the past year, and I was hoping to improve that. But it’s because it’s a bit self-serving that I decided to ask in this thread before actually doing it.

Thank you. That’s very nice of you to say.

IANAM either, but I disagree. [ol][]Although a question like this is probably narrower in scope than most, members ask fairly specific questions all the time: “My kid did thus-and-so; how should I punish him?” “I’m making this specific Halloween costume; how do I make wings?” “Need legal advice for this specific jurisdiction on this specific topic”. Heck, I’ve seen a number of specific job-application/interview questions before. []By the nature of the resume question, I would think that you’d get a number of general answers (“zev needs to use more action verbs”) that would be of interest in a case-study-sort-of-way to other people. []Even though there’s 20,000+ members here, if you took the number that were in the job market at any one time, subtracted those who rarely post anyway, subtracted those who feel that posting a resume reveals too much personal information (a substantial number, IMO), and subtracted those who don’t feel like they need much resume help, I don’t believe there would ever be a huge number of people requesting resume suggestions. []Finally, there are a few events in life that are of large importance. Changing jobs is usually one of them. I feel that a little more latitude should be given to posters relating to these important events.[/ol]To be honest, had I been zev, I would have posted without asking. Maybe that would have been wrong, but I guess it wouldn’t have occured to me that such a thing might be frowned on. Guess I’d make a crummy moderator.

Zev, I’ve run this by the Moderators and got a few consent and no disagreement, so go ahead. The post should (of course) be located in IMHO forum, where self-serving stuff is allowed (up to a point.)

On the “what if everyone did it?” question… well, that’s why we appreciate that Zev asked first. If we had dozens of such requests, it would be too hard to monitor. Remember that Moderators generally look at any links in any posts, to try to prevent links to Nekkid Young Teens on Viagara with Cheap Presciptions and the like. So, we’re OK with this on a one-by-one basis as long as it doesn’t get outta hand.

Zev, thanks for asking. And zut, now you’re more knowledgable in how/why the boards are moderated.

Thank you CK.

 You just summarized a year of spam!

Regarding the OP - as a user of the board, I have no problem with it and agree that any general advice could be of use to others. Also, the voyeuristic tendencies within certain of us might give us enjoyment just being able to peek at and critique someone else’s resume. As long as the thread is clearly titled, I don’t see how anyone could mind - if you open a thread entitled “critique zev’s resume”, you know what to expect.

…not to mention that Zev is (IMO) a valuable and interesting contributor to the board so deserves some slack.
