I have an old USB charger plug since I no longer use a cell phone. Also, I have a MP3 player that I use a USB cord to charge it on the computer. Is it possible to use the cell phone charger to charge my MP3 player in an outlet or will it simply blow it up?
While generally universal some devices lie the Motorola Razr phones would refuse to work with non Motorola USB power adapters.
Depends. Most phones that use USB chargers refuse to use other, apparently identical, chargers. They use the intelligence of the USB interface to force users to purchase their own, specific model. But most non-cell electronics just use the power from the USB interface and work - assuming that the cell charger produces enough amperage for the device. If you plug a charger that supplied 500 milliamps into a device that needs 1000 milliamps (one amp), it will either not work, or it will attempt to supply more than it can deliver and die trying and overheat.
