Rollin’ rollin’ rollin’, keep that Rick guy rollin’…
There have been very few instances of RickRolling on the Dope, as far as I know. Two were reported this morning and another last week. Searching for the term doesn’t turn up much, but then, that’s the idea. We’ve clarified the rule on NSFW links, although it probably covered this situation anyway:
Good point. That looks like possible precedent (to my amateur eye) for a moratorium on “Rickrolling,” should the staff so decide.
I find RRing irritating, not Internet-breaking. But that’s mostly because I can avoid it. And these things do have a way of getting run into the ground, like the 1920s-style death ray gags lately.
Carefully mousing over links and thinking about their poster’s known proclivities wouldn’t chase me off the SDMB, but it would add a level of annoyance I do not currently have to endure.
In case it wasn’t clear in my post, the word “sound” was added to that rule by Dex. In full, the rule could have been understood to apply in this situation anyway, but this makes it clearer.
I don’t think that the video can really be considered NSFW, or containing a startling sound/image. If you need to keep your workplace surfing on the QT, you shouldn’t be clicking random links while having the sound turned up. Most links don’t elaborate terribly much on where they’re going, and can always result in some ad throwing out some noise.
Rick Rolling is by definition a joke, and you can probably make an argument that it is inappropriate to post something like that in GQ, GD, ATMB, CCC and CSR, and maybe in IMHO, CS and GR, but this silly stuff is made for MPSIMS and the Pit is a free for all.
I mean, collectively, deliberately do nothing, when it happens.
Rickrolling is annoying, I agree. But if nobody responds to the post in which it happens - everybody just carries on as if it wasn’t there, then the silly joke falls completely flat.
My previous post shows one example of the many methods to comply with the 2-click rule. Interested users can just copy/paste the URL in the address bar and add the h.
Whatever method you use, just preview first to check that the link is disabled. There’s no need to use a special URL as crowmanyclouds suggests.
Unclicking “Automatically parse links in text” has one important deficiency: if the post is quoted, the quoter probably won’t remember to unclick that option.
I dunno. Sometimes it’s amusing, others it isn’t. Surely the latter can be classed as jerkish behaviour? And sometimes people make mistakes. So alert the mods and let them decide.
Tell me about it. It’s a cheesy 1980s video, not goatse, lemonparty or something like that. I’d hate to see how he would react if he’s confronted with a lolcat, ORLY owl or HA! HA! Quaker.
A stupid meme from the outside world, which doesn’t involve pies, death rays, or Opalcat is not a sign of the apocalypse. If the OP is looking for a message board that is completely insulated from Internet memes, I recommend some academic quantum mechanics or postmodernist philosophy listserv.
Always nice to have you posting without sounding like, oh what was it they said about ya the other day?
More charitably to the OP, if you are bothered by the fact that a prank is played on you, maybe you need to relax and take a deep breath (and plot revenge).
