Is anyone in Cuba a SDMB member?

I’m listening to a program on pbs titled The Cubans. Although the program’s about Cubans in the US, I got to wondering. I’ve never noticed any postings from Cuba, but that doesn’t mean there haven’t been any.
I don’t know if Gitmo should count. Nah, not for this thread. But if anyone’s there, go ahead and say hi.

I would imagine that at this time, Cubans are more interested in getting to where it is safe, rather than posting to the SDMB.

For that matter, what is the state of internet access in Cuba?

I have been to Cuba 5 times, and it is my understanding that the very few that have internet access are limited in what they are allowed to view. Even sending e-mails is limited and/or restricted. I never saw a computer while I was there.

Not very good, according to this recent Wired
article:

I know two Cuban journalists working in the official media who have access to e-mail and to some of the internet (one of them uses a Yahoo e-mail address). I get the impression they are among the privileged few who are allowed to use this because of their work.

I suspect that this is the case. OTOH, I received a IM on Yahoo from a woman purporting to be an academic in Cuba about five years ago. She said she would get back in touch, but several weeks went by, and nothing. I had been dubious to start out, but then I got kinda suspicious there was some kind of setup going down, and about two weeks on, I put that pseudo on the “reject” list.

I have no idea what was really going on. There is a TMI thing, but this is GQ, and I don’t ever plan to to deliberately challenge the moderators.

Well that sucks. I wonder how the govt stops it? There are posters on here from other countries where personal freedoms are severely limited, like China. I know chinese people in the states routinely email relatives in mainland China.
Maybe the problem is infrastructure as much as anything else. I understand Cuba’s telephone system is in a really sorry state. Cubans are, or were, prohibited from watching US television, but everybody does it. Even publicly, in bars and the like.
If anyone in Cuba ia reading this, and connot (for whatever reason) reply back, I hope that someday soon the people of our countries can be friendly and communicate freely with each other.

There are at least two posters from Puerto Rico and three from the Dominican Rep., quite a lot if you remember that Cuba has a larger population than PR and DR. Sad, it would be nice to have Cubans here too. :frowning:
