What does a blister on the sun refer to?
The singer blisters in the sun. Maybe the sun is a reflection on being ginger. While jacking off to Furry Bear magazine.
It’s a simile. The real question is why he’s going white.
That’s more-or-less what I think is going on here. It’s just words that sound good together that kind of make sense and might have some thematic coherence but, then again, they might not. It’s not a completely uncommon form of songwriting. I’m not convinced it’s explicitly “about” masturbation, and I don’t get the homosexual angle at all. I just can’t figure out how people are getting that.
I assume it’s the “big hands, I know you are the one” line.
Ah. In the context of the masturbation interpretation, I always heard that lyric as addressing the singer’s own hands. But I never really quite bought the masturbation interpretation of this song (although I can see some of the imagery suggesting it.)
The song is HUGE when played in a cover-band context. Gets the biggest dance-crowd, sing-along engagement every time.
I just sing it with a vaguely sexy-sneery-shaky tone. That’s about all the lyrics require. As I think about them, yeah, I guess I assumed they were basically that he felt sexual tension all the time - like a blister in the sun - and all the other lyrics are word salad related to that. Maybe a bit of a sense that his girlfriend is upset because he whacks off all the time, but it’s the only way he can relieve the tension. Simply because it fits the sexy-sneery-shaky vibe I get from it.
Ultimately, though, it’s just catchy. The VF’s have a few like that - they just get stuck in your head. Add it Up, Gone Daddy Gone…
The delivery must have something to with it. I mean, they are the Violent Femmes after all.

a lesbian or an effeminate male homosexual who takes a traditionally feminine sexual role.

To my knowledge, they picked the name because Femme was used as an insult by the “cool kids” against Gano at school.
Lemme check…and it appears I am incorrect:

It seems to me that some songwriters like to make a game of saying their songs aren’t really about [topic] when in fact they are totally obviously about [topic], and then smirking in self-satisfaction at the fans who take their word for it.
Yes, Blister In The Sun is about masturbation. Half the songs I listened to in the 80’s were about masturbation - She Bop, Turning Japanese…
I wouldn’t have thought songs on this topic are incredibly common, but in retrospect I can think of quite a few. My favorite song about masturbation is a 90s song - Green Day’s Longview. (Also about depression.)
That was always my take: “You’re masturbating, but you won’t have sex with me?”
