Is breaded and fried fish still considered "good" for you?

That’s your take.

We all know fast food is bad. Fact.
We all know fried foods are bad in quantities. Fact.
We all know these things cause obesity in obscene numbers. Fact.

So in Cafe it’s opinion as to whether you can enjoy w/o ruining your health.

In moderation you can have breaded and fried food. Again, occasionally. Fact.

We all know fried foods taste good. Fact

See, I supplied a cite.

You supplied,

I am so over the whole “good for you” thing. I bought some braunschweiger the other day. It’s for me for use on breakfast egg sandwiches. My gf noticed it and informed me that braunschweiger is one of the foods that you should never consume. She read it somewhere. I’m buying more.

This is Cafe Society.

You know…about foodie stuff.

We all know fried stuff is bad for you. Don’t need cites to tell us that.

See…I supplied common sense.

I’ll take two, with a side of fries.

Omega-3 has come up, naturally. So what about those Omega-3 fish oil capsules that people take? Yeah, the Omega-3 part is beneficial but what about the fact that you are simply adding more oil to your diet by taking them? Isn’t it intended that you should replace some “bad” oil with the Omega-3 oil?

Having closely monitored my metabolism for the past year, I’m convinced that, for my body, the breaded part is worse than the fried part.

A grilled pork chop has about 100mg of chlolesterol while a fried cod fillet has about 60. Advantage: fish.

However, the pork chop will have about 310 calories providing about 50g of protein, providing more nutrients and satiety, while the fried fish will have an extra 100 calories providing only about 15g of protein. Advantage: pork chop.

If I might venture to make sweeping generalization: battered, breaded and fried foods are less healthy than most other kinds of food.

I don’t think you are adding enough oil to really make a difference. I take a prescription that is basically made from fish oil and the four capsules I take daily come to 2 grams. Fish oil supplements usually recommend 1-2 grams a day

How bad is it? In what ways is it bad? What portions (calories, total fat, sat fat, trans fat) of it are bad? In what quantities are the portions or the whole bad? How long does it take to be bad? In what quantities over what periods? How do different fish used matter? How does breading vs. battering matter? How does cooking time/temperature/amount of fat matter? Can it be made to be less bad? What studies are needed to give these questions have quantifiable answers?

We all “know” nothing without answers to questions like these.

Good for you, that stuff is delicious.

All good questions and like most people I probably gloss over most of them and think, “Oh, yeah, that Filet-O-Fish is better for me then the McDouble”. Maybe if I deleted the cheese slice.

Another question. Whatever happened to Olestra, the oil that was to supposed to provide the good mouth feel but was not supposed to be absorbed in the gut? I do remember people talking about how it led to “Leakage”. I remember trying some Olestra chips and they tasted too oily.

Exactly what you remember, there was a large pushback against the “leakage” which happened if you ate Olestra in American quantities, rather than “suggested servings”. The pushback was pretty much in all news media, from TV to magazines. Thus it stopped being profitable fast, so was spun off, applied to ever fewer options, and finally stopped being used entirely in the US, but was already banned in many other nations.

Specifically, “anal leakage”, the most terrifying combination of two words in the English language.

That’s a contradiction in terms.

Sure, there are foods that specific people should never consume (e.g. because allergies), and foods that you should only consume in moderation. But if it’s food, it is to be consumed.

I ain’t doing your homework.

You may be able to eat more of it than me or the next person. You may get more excercise than me or the next person.
I can’t supply you with that data.
Your doctor might be able to do so after bloodwork.

Tuesday may be a better day to go than Friday, For You.

Wednesday is my day.
I know this because my blood is monitored regularly.
You will differ and so will the next person.

In GENERAL we do know breaded fried foods are not the best choice for a healthy diet.

See? I did it again. Common sense.

Reading the Wikipedia article on Olestra was quite interesting. The original Procter and Gamble scientists were trying to find a fat that was more easily digested. Instead they found one that did not digest at all. So much for that theory.

Later on they submitted “adverse event reports” to the FDA. Gotta love a bit of spin doctoring!
