From all the buzz I hear about this show; it seems like it is. (which would be way cool BTW)
I’m just wondering if there is any truth to that.
Well, I know my old econ prof loved Battlestar Galactica, and made a point of putting BSG-themed problems on her exams. I don’t believe she was much of a science-fiction fan in general.
I dunno, I guess I’m a borderline draw. I mean, I like sci-fi well enough and had Star Wars toys when I was a kid. I know what a dalek is, I think. But I don’t watch anything else on the channel, and if I happen to catch a bit of Stargate I’ll mute it and wander away until that crap is over. I can’t watch Star Trek at all.
The real question is whether anybody is watching it, even sf fans.
Average viewership was 2.8 million per episode in the first season and 2.3 million in the second season. The third season’s debut was off 29% from that, and the first four episodes averaged 20% less.
This is less than half the viewership of a low rated network show, say, 30 Rock.
There’s buzz and then there’s reality.
Are all the people watching core sf fanatics? Probably not. But it’s not likely that the show is making great inroads into the general viewing community. It’s on the Sci-fi Channel, after all, and that alone would be a turnoff for most. Even given that all cable shows have lower viewership than the comparable shows on a network, BSG cannot be called a hit.
The REAL question is: Is it repelling the fans it had faster than it’s adding new ones?
Because it certainly does suck now.
