Is circumcision required to be a Muslim?

I heard Putin made some crack about Muslims and male circumcision. According to the translator, Mr. Putin understands that male circumcision is important to the Muslim faith and he invites them to have it done in Russia where they’ll uh–make sure to do a very good job of it (if you know what I mean).

Does Islam dictate all Muslim men to be circumcised or is Putin getting his religions crossed?

Despite these reports, only one of the four schools of Islamic law enacted a circumcision “law,” ruling it a religious requirement (wajiba). A second maintains that it is sunnah and thus strongly recommended but not required.

The remaining schools of law, along with independent jurists, maintain that the practice is permitted (ja’iz) but not required or even recommended. Indeed, even those who require the practice attribute very little space and discussion to it in their books of law.

No intention (niyyah) is required in order to fulfill one’s obligation; one may be circumcised in a hospital for health reasons, for no reason, or one may have been circumcised with no religious intention before converting to Islam. No further ritual action is required in order for any of these to count as the fulfillment of the religious requirement. Furthermore, no set rules define the age at which a child is circumcised or the ritual ceremonies involved.

Popular practice and estimation nonetheless consider the ritual to bear almost legal weight…

What you mean he actually communicated this nationally (as in, allowed the information to reach the public)? I’d think it was bad PR for him no? Or does it not matter? B/C it sound like he just trussed a religion - major NO NO by political standards.

Actually he was snapping at a reporter who was asking him annoying questions, and he basically said “why don’t you get a circumcision and go join them”

Thats the gist of it anyways.
