Not apocryphal – Ozzy did indeed bite the head from a bat on stage. Two doves also fell to the same fate a few years before that infamous happening.

[warning: pictures of the event, could be disturbing.] Also, he and his wife Sharon have discussed both the bat and doves on numerous occasions, most recently in their autobiography Ordinary People: Our Story. Tommy Mattola [former CEO of Epic/Sony] was present when it happened and has told the story numerous times, most notably on Ozzy’s VH1 BTM.
