I keep hearing that David Cross is known for being pretentious and just an overall asshole. However, I haven’t heard any of the specifics of this. Does anyone know where this comes from and stories?
Well, I don’t like him and I don’t think he’s funny, but that doesn’t help much, does it?
That’s interesting - I like him, and I think he’s funny. And I think pretentiousness is his act, no? But YMMV, right?
The Doctor
Where is this coming from? I don’t think I’ve ever heard him described as pretentious (htough he is an adamant atheist, and some people equate the two). Have you ever heard his stand up routine? Highly recommended. I suppose it is a bit on the asshole-ish side, but so is George Carlin, Denis Leary, even Mitch Hedberg at times. So what? He’s apparently quite charming on set. As for personal encounters, I’m sure they vary, but I’ve seen enough jovial candids with fans to guess he’s not always a jerk in public.
He comes across as kind of a dick in the commentary tracks for Mr. Show. I mean, I think he’s right that a good deal of comedy is banal and otherwise pretty bad, but the whole crew seems snottier about it than I think is called for.
Well, where are you hearing it? He might be a little arrogant in his comedy; I do know he’s openly political. And he’s played some characters who are very full of themselves. Maybe people are assuming that’s what he’s really like?
It’s probably from Larry The Cable Guy fans. He’s had choice words about Dan, the man behind the character.
Wow. He might be an asshole, but my estimation of him went up after reading that.
Join the club. That was really pretty great.
I read an Onion interview with him a while back where he came across as really pretentious. It was shortly after Eddie Izzard’s Dressed to Kill had come out and been a big success, and Cross was pretty dismissive. He criticized Izzard’s show as not being “about” anything, not having any sort of message. He came across as very arrogant, and not in a way that seemed humorous or ironic.
Um I have some bad news for you.
Mitch Hedberg (24 February 1968 - 29 March 2005)
Unless of course you knew that and were speaking of him in past tense.
This is no kind of definitive answer, but personally, every time I hear David Cross talk as himself, and not as a character or from a prepared script, my reaction is “He’s kind of an asshole, isn’t he?” That could very easily be more about me than about him, but there it is. I get the same vibe from his standup stuff, as opposed to his character work.
I sure hope so. One of the reasons I like Cross is because in interviews and what not, he comes across a quite the dick. It works for him, in my opinion. If he were a nice guy pretending to be an asshole, I think I’d like him a little less, actually.
Seems like kind of a dick and is pretty rough on the south, but that was a great rant and it won’t stop me from enjoying immensely his work in Arrested Development and Mr. Show.
Don’t know, don’t really care. Probably he’s the same amount of asshole as all of us, only out loud. What I want to know is, is he gay?
I saw him on celebrity poker, and he seemed perfectly nice to me. He dressed down Carrie Fischer for giving him the finger. Good for him.
let’s “Gittle-R-Ding-Dong-Done!”
Criticizing DtK? That’s it. He’s an orifice.
Larry the Cable Guy is totally unfunny.
David Cross has his moments, but as a guy, he strikes me as more cynical, less asshole. With a dash of both, to be sure. I like his politics and he reminds me more of a funny guy than a comedian, if you get my drift.
Doesn’t matter. I’d rather have a room full of David Crosses than one tired, pathetically unfunny cable guy.
