Is Disney Atlantis a copy of Nadia?

Even though it seems likely no-one else in interested in this discussion anymore, I just picked up the latest issue of NewType and thought I’d share with you all what I’ve learned about the Nadia/Atlantis thing from it. I figured that if any magazine is going to have good coverage of this, it’s gonna be NewType.

I’ll start off by saying that the cover story for this issue is Studio Gainax itself. You know, the producers of Nadia. There’s a six page article detailing the new television shows that they’re producing this year, as well as a brief overview of their television history. Nadia features prominantly. Atlantis is not mentioned.

The poster included with this issue is from Atlantis. Unlike the pics posted on the Atlantis/Nadia comparison web sites, the characters and images featured here bear no resemblance whatsoever to Nadia. There’s also a two page article about the movie in which Nadia is not mentioned even once.

In other news, Tonari No Totoro is coming to the big screen for the first time in Korea. Knockin’ on Heaven’s Door isn’t listed among the summer blockbusters, causing me to wonder when it’s gonna be released. The Anime Science column explains what exactly would happen to either Ultraman or King Ghidra if they actually attempted supersonic flight. Bandai has released some new toys and model kits… Okay, my new giant robot of choice is the FA-010-S Gundam. Academy Models has gained the rights to distribute plastic kits based on the units from StarCraft. They’ll be 1/30 scale, and are priced at 3000W. There’s coverage of the Annecy Animation Festival, wherever that is. One of the images shown is from Bill Plympton. And that’s about it.

To sum up… The #1 magazine of Asian geekdom has not even acknowledged the Nadia/Atlantis story.
