Consumer Reports rates Panasonic’s DMR-E55 DVD recorder as a best buy, and its time slip feature seems like it would be very handy. (fast forwarding through commercials while watching football games would be great.) However I’ve read that the DVD-RAM format is either obsolete or soon will be. Is this something I should worry about?
I never trust CR for reviews of electronic audio/video equipment. Their expertise & judgement on these categories leaves a lot to be desired.
This review says it records in -R and DVD-RAM not just not DVD-RAM. DVD-R is quite popular. IIRC the DVD-RAM format is the only one that offers intermittent stop & go recording that mimics tape.
I think it might be worthwhile to look at a unit that can also play more DVD formats like DVD re-writable discs, and has a built in hard drive.
