That’s all I got. I’m tired. What do you think - is it ‘taking longer than we thought’ because it’s flat-out impossible?
It will never end until mankind has passed from the earth and firmament above.
Every man needs a hobby, and it’s a good endeavor.
I do not believe that fighting ignorance is futile. If the goal was to end all ignorance, yes it would be, but if the goal is to end some ignorance, well that is noble enough for me. Of course we do very to fight ignorance here as posters. We exchange ideas, learn a few things and hopefully enjoy ourselves. It is up to Cecil and the SDSAB to do the heavy lifting.

I believe that life overall is a futile endeavor, ultimately, as it ends the same way.
But since it’s the best we have, best to roll with it and do what seems worthwhile. And fighting ignorance seems as worthwhile as anything I can think of.
So, I guess I’d say: Yes, but so what?
Fighting ignorance - it’s not just my job, it’s a hobby as well!
So you folk are saying ‘never give up; never surrender’?
Might there be better ways of going about it? Will talk (well, in written form here) do the job?
Mostly. Folks will always be ignorant and myopic and we all have our share of it. Without a good dose of ignorance now and then I’m sure we’d all go mad.
Well, we made a promise we swore we’d always remember
No retreat, baby, no surrender
Like soldiers in the winter’s night
With a vow to defend
No retreat, baby, no surrender
Yeah, it’s pretty frustrating. I got tired of providing the same old enlightenment over and over again on quite a few topics. Now, unless I’m feeling particularly loquacious, I tend to not correct the same “old wives tales” (or the new young woman you’re co-habiting with stories) that get repeated over and over again, about such topics as medical treatments, physiology, the effect of full moons on ER utilization, etc.
Now on the street tonight the lights grow dim
The walls of my room are closing in
There’s a war outside still raging
You say it ain’t ours anymore to win
I want to sleep beneath
Peaceful skies in my lover’s bed
With a wide open country in my eyes
And these romantic dreams in my head
“No Surrender” by Springsteen
The only place where you can fight ignorance is within yourself. Look in the mirror and get started (meant generally. not targeting any person.)
So, teachers are useless?
I can think of a few that fit that description.
No. Try your best, and give up on pig headed people to maintain your sanity. Everything has it’s limits for mortals, and I guess that all of us. Remember dissension doesn’t always mean somebody is wrong. Ok, that’s enough of that.
Well, sure. Hell, I had a few in my school daze. But. you can say that about any profession.
Every day there are many new babies born. All share one trait, total ignorance. It is our job as adults to teach them. The level of ignorance in a society as a whole is a reflection of how well we are doing our job. And it seems we must do more. Handing diplomas and degrees to people who cannot read them to preserve thier self esteem does not seem to be working…
I’ve just spent two days at Yahoo Answers. :smack:
My brain hurts from the depth of ignorance. I have some sort of ignorance fighting bends coming up to the level of the Dope. I had forgotten how spoiled I’ve been here - even the ignorants here are the cream of the crop, statistically speaking. I can only hope that some of these people are pulling legs, because if people this stupid have computer use and internet access, there’s simply no help for our civilization.
I am going to plead the 5th on that one. LMAO
I keep getting the feeling there’s a specific bit of ignorance you’re looking to fight, but really, we fight ignorance all the time. I share this board with intelligent, educated, witty people–okay, and a few dipsticks, but mostly intelligent, educated, witty people–and the sharing of knowledge is a way to fight ignorance. When someone posts a thread about the debates in the U.S. Senate or how hexagonal storms are formed on Saturn, that’s fighting ignorance. We’re doing it all over the place.
Ignorance actually increases with each new discovery, invention, theory, political movement, technological advance, anything that involves one individual or group learning something that has yet to spread to the general public. The process of informing the general public adds another layer of ignorance by way of the combination of bias and incomplete understanding of the reporter(s) of the newly acquired knowledge.
Even if the entire scope of human knowledge and understanding in every field of endeavor were magically to be imparted to every human being on the planet at the same instant, within an hour of that event somebody would come up with something nobody else knew, and the whole process would start over.
Add to this impossibility the bias and environmental factors associated with people deliberately holding on to myths, superstitions, legends, regional customs and other poorly understood components of an individual’s “understanding” and the problem is increased.
And “fighting ignorance” is just a catchphrase to start with. It’s a nice slogan and that’s all it is.
