It wasn’t supposed to be a fact in the sense of something that is provably true. It was supposed to be a fact in the sense of something that sounds like it might be true and you hope nobody looks into it too deeply.

Well, there are, really. In terms of what “conservative” actually means, there are an abundance of them on the “fake news MSM” networks and a very small number of them on the alt-news networks like Fox. These people who call themselves conservatives are some other thing that are more like ultra-reactionaries.
Like, shit, I looked at that post and immediately assumed “May 2018”. What a shock to see that I was off by a decade. It’s taking longer than we thought indeed.
