Is humanity a team with a shared goal?

Inspired by the thread As a childless atheist, I am free to trash the earth

Ok, simple question. Are you part of the humanity “team” with a shared “goal”? Any related opinions you care to add are optional and appreciated.

Yes, the goal is mutual survival and continued existance of our genetic lineage.

No. Segments of humanity may function as a team, but overall it’s more of a competition.

Yes!

Our goal is To Bludgeon Humanity To Death! ™

And we’re winning!!!

YAY!

No. We’re a bunch of wind-up toys behaving like a virus.

I think not. One of the stated aims of most of humanity is to make more little humans, and I had myself childproofed.

I’m part of the humanity team right now, but I don’t particularly care if the species survives, just that it be as good as possible for the largest number while it exists.

Yes. I hope so. I’d like to think the human race will find some way to fix the more severe problems that plague us, like crime, poverty, war, and disease. Based on the rate of technological advancement during the last couple centuries, I think technology will eventually allow humans to stop focusing on mere day-to-day survival and start concentrating our resources on collective growth and prosperity. I think the idea that we’ll colonize other planets and possibly the stars is exhilarating. If people like Hawking are to be believed, our continued existance actually depends on this.

No. First, I regard the replacement of humanity by something better as a desirable goal. Second, I don’t think there is a shared goal; name one, and there will be millions who oppose it. Third, an awful lot of humans don’t appear to regard anyone outside their own little group as counting at all, much less as being on the same “team”; I can’t be on their “team” because they wouldn’t have me.

OTTOMH, the only plot that comes to mind in which all humanity is united under a single banner is the alien invasion one, and only when the aliens try to just straight-up kill us all, as opposed to assimilating into our societies, playing divide-and-conquer games, entering politics and dominating mass media, or what have you.

In other words, the Independence Day scenario. And let’s face it, nothing less will get the Israeli and Egyptian air forces to camp out together in the Sinai without killing each other… I wonder if they were roasting [kosher] weenies and marshmallows over the campfires?

No; humans are morally flawed and always will be. They will take advantage of each other in order to further their own happiness; nobody can be trusted to act “for the benefit of the species”.

I think I used to have the false presumption that everbody in the world really wanted the same thing- To live in a democracy, have a job doing your part in your community’s economy, be nice to your neighbor and them be nice to you, have family and friends, enjoy your freedoms, yada-yada-yada.

How naive of me. Too many people in the world with the us vs. them mentality. Too many extremists willing to kill and die rather than compromise. Too many people waiting for opportunities to take advantage of the other guy to further themselves. And a lot of sickos along the way too.

Yes. To increase conciousness in richness, diversity and depth to the best of our shared ability.

This goal transends mere tribal and philosophical divisions.

From my perspective, it is the ability to express the products of conciousness which makes humans qualitatively different from other animals. It is the shared goal of life to make more life from nonlife. It is the shared goal of those possessing both conciousness and the ability to express it, to do so to the best of their ability and to help others to do the same.

In my opinion, such a “goal” is not established by any diety or creator outside of creation–it is just inherent in the nature of possessing such abilities.
