Is I10 open from Florida to Texas?

Hello All,

My father will be leaving Toronto, for an extended stay in the U.S. south. Usually his travel route is south on I75 then west on I10. He is not interested in the quickest route, just this route.

Today he asked me if, as a result of Katrina, I10 was closed/damaged/rerouted in the New Orleans vicinity (or else where). Can any of you shed light on this?

Thanks in advance.

Winfield

No information on conditions there, but…

Note that he’ll probably want I-12, running north of Lake Pontchartrain roughly between the Mississippi state border and the Mississippi River, departing from and feeding back onto I-10 at each end. I-10 goes south of the lake through New Orleans. I don’t know conditions in the area, but my impression from news and such is that that route is not only shorter (and avoiding the city) but also that it didn’t get quite as much hurricane damage. (Confirm that with someone from the area or phone Louisiana state police, though.)

Somebody asked this in our local newspaper’s question-and-answer column about a week ago. (Wanted to drive from Austin to Miami)

The answer is “yes, it is open.”

It reopened on Oct 14, but only one span of the bridge betw NO and Slidell is open, so there’s a short stretch of two way traffic.
