Huh? After the 2016 campaign, it’s Clinton you call out for “saying rude things, or making fun of them, or finding fault with them”?
This is why we can’t have nice things.
See, both sides do it!
Speaking for myself I am amenable to some traditionally conservative positions and could certainly find compromise on some others.
That said the Trump version of conservatism and his followers? No, absolutely not. I won’t try to convert them and they can save their time trying to convert me.
I’ve noted before that Trump said rude and insulting things about illegals, and about Muslim furriners who wanted to enter this country, and about plenty of other people who weren’t going to, y’know, vote; and Clinton said rude and insulting things about millions of voters, whom she found deplorable and irredeemable.
I’m not 100% sure that was a smart move on her part.
If a liberal can’t be bothered to vote when Donald Trump is on the ballot, how much hope is there of ever inspiring that person to action?
There is a third way not mentioned in the OP. Convert those who voted for Trump to become apathetic. From a Civics standpoint this probably isn’t the best idea but it is probably the easiest. These would be the voters that Chronos mentioned here:
Given their cynicism with government and politics in general it would be easy to convince them that even their so called savior was really just part of the system that screwed them over, so they may as well just give up and stay home.
I think Dems would be foolish if they didn’t court Trump voters with promises of coal mining and Carrier plant jobs. Perhaps some talk about building a solar powered wall somewhere and having Canada pay for it. They don’t actually have to deliver on that. Seems to me that empty promises is all that it would take.
Trump said rude things, made fun of, or found fault with: women, veterans, POWs, handicapped people, Muslims, immigrants, the press, liberals, etc. All of who might vote.
It’s very telling when someone blames Clinton for insults.
How many times have any of you ever changed your mind based on being insulted and belittled? Trump supporters will change their minds just as often for those reasons.
Y’all can rethink what you are doing, or you can follow the lead of the Libertarians and spiral down into a cesspit of prizing virtue signalling and ideological purity over winning any offices that matter.
I had to re-read this a couple of times, because I was sure it was a typo, that you meant to say “HE LIED.”
Because the entire gist of that paragraph was that he (1) repeated lies that other people told, and (2) promised that he would implement those lies. In other words, he also lied. :smack:
Clinton promised retraining etc. for coal miners in a long speech. Trumpites and GOPers carved out a single line of that speech to sound like she was choosing to end coal-mining jobs. A lie – or in this case a misleading truncation – runs thrice around the world while the truth is still tying its running shoes. ![]()
There is this peculiar logic in American politics: “What causes us to behave a certain way, won’t cause our opponents to behave the same way.”
Republicans: “the Democrats will become more moderate after their 2016 defeat which humbled them!”……uh, no, the GOP’s losses in 2008 and 2012 didn’t have that effect on the Republicans, so why would it work the other way around?
Democrats before the election: *“Hillary will win in a landslide because many Trump voters will finally realize, at the last moment, that Hillary is better!” *…uh,no, they didn’t, not any more so than Hillary voters realized that Trump was better.
Some other pundits: * “Insulting and belittling our side will only make us vote for our side with even greater fervor, but insulting and belittling our opponents, will make THEM want to vote for US!”
*
In foreign policy: “When America was attacked on 9/11, we became stronger and our resolve intensified, but when *we *bomb our enemies, their resolve will be weakened!”
Clinton insulted half of Trump’s voters. Trump insulted all of Trump’s voters, as a class. Plus a number that he insulted multiple times, for being in one of his other target categories (such as women).
Neither am I.
In my opinion, if you guys want to win, you need to understand one thing about Trump voters:
It’s not so much that that love Trump. It’s that they hate you.
Until you can understand why, you won’t win.
In other words, abandon any pro-abortion, pro-equality, pro-gun control, pro-regulation, pro-UHC, or basically pro-liberal stand.
In other other words, become Republicans. Yeahrite.
But I believe that has been mentioned earlier – the portion of the Trump supporters/voters who just hate the opposition and want to taste their tears are not who should be given priority in reaching. Marginal return-on-effort is too steep. It’s the portion that said to themselves they might as well vote for Trump because they did not feel any of the others were speaking to them or because at least it would be different than the usual stooges (and the system would self-regulate to check him); as well as as a large portion of those who voted for neither but would have turned out were there a latter-day Obama or Bill Clinton running. Those would be enough to swing it.
Interesting article here on a professor who has been studying Trump supporters in Wisconsin for a year.
As a good professor he doesn’t come out and say directly that these voters are racist yahoos. But they obviously are. They hate the cities because the cities are doing better and they don’t deserve to because, well, you know, Them. They want money to be spent in their areas, even though they already get a disproportional share and refuse to believe it. They want respect without giving any respect in return. They’re good, ordinary, salt-of-the-earth, hard working deplorables.
We are not like them. We will never and can never be like them. The world is changing in ways that will never be to their benefit. They hate that and want it to stop and are taking it out on people who stand to benefit from change.
You can’t logic or reason people out of that mindset. There is nothing that can be given them to change the future, nothing that will bring back the old ways, nothing that will turn the world majority white. All that can be done is outnumber them as they dwindle and stop giving them the power to hurt the rest of America politically.
As was said, we can’t win until we understand that. Do not compromise with them. Do not believe in bipartisanship. Do not abandon a single liberal or progressive position. Get the people who are on our side to vote in proportional numbers. Do it with positives that make their hate obvious. Crush them politically, in every race for every office at every level.
Bang up job you’re doing so far.
