Is it just me or does toilet paper IS getting thinner over recent years?

I live in canada so I don’t know what the TP company politics in United State  But here, TP is getting thinner every year. One can imagine that this can be annoying. So what’s the reason for this… I mean is it cost effectivness ? If so why don’t they just raise the #!$&!!# prize !!! wait… they do raise the prize !! So whats the stock for those company… I bet they’re raising like hell. At least holding some of the stock would make the experience less painfull

In the UK it’s actually getting thicker (or at leaster there are extra-thick varieties coming out).

I’d guess that supermarket own brands and other cheap substitutes are putting the squeeze on normal paper (ie. Andrex over here).

Also, you can now (in the UK) see how much your paper costs per 100 sheets on the supermarket price tags, so companies might be cutting corners to lower this (before a company could just remove a few sheets - no-one would notice).

Anyway, those are my guesses.

Yes, but that’s what you get for buying that store-brand, institutional bumwad. Stick with the premium quilted brands or better yet get a bidet on ebay for the ultimate in hiney hygene. I got one after reading Opalcat’s post and my booty has never been cleaner.

Scott’s US tissue paper, that has something like 1000 sheets per roll, seems thinner to me. Some of them do put air in the roll so it looks bigger but I don’t think toilet paper is getting any thinner. Did you look at the package & see if it says ‘two ply’?

The evil entity I work for sells TP by the case. It IS getting thinner. It is also getting smaller. The owner started in the biz back in the 40’s. Early on the standard sheet of TP was 4.5"x4.5". Over the years, manufacturers have slowly shaved off tiny amounts from each dimension. Same price, less paper. Paper bag manufacturers do this too in much the same way.
On a different tangent, Marvel Comics started trimming the height of their comics by about 1/8" a couple of years ago. Don’t believe me? Put a new Marvel comic next to either an early 90’s comic or a current DC comic.

My local newspaper has converted to a smaller, tabloid sized print with slightly re-arranged columns. The size difference saves thousands of dollar per year.

I’m guessing that someone at the manufacturing plant spends many hours figuring out how to do this and how much can be saved.

To see the real price of TP (or any roll type paper product), calculate the total square footage and price it accordingly.

In answer to your question, I think that you, too, are growing thinner.

Ha Ha

I knew it. As Mr. Blue Sky point out TP is getting thinner for cost saving. We should start an association of people against the tp thinning syndrom ( PATPTS )
We would stand aside with SALAMI manifestation. hmmm. just kiddin’ there!

As for the formula to calculate the price, I understand that one could calculate the price per sheet on different brand by the size and number of sheets. BUT, What are we to do to evaluate the price factor regarding how thin the paper is.

Here’s what i think we should do :

  • First, you class the brand by size of the sheets.
  • Second, for each class you calculate the sheets price.
  • Third, you find the stock price for each company for the last year or so.
  • Fourth, you look for stock price increase and compare it to inflation, this will indicate growth.
  • Five, you select the paper which has the better growth/price ratio ( that is high price, low growth ). Because, if there’s growth they must have cut somewhere ( size or thickness ).

What do you think ?

Yeah, it’s getting thinner. I’ve seen some one-ply papers in some public bathrooms that you could actually see through!

TP is also becoming more compressed. In the US, the “double roll” is becoming more popular. This is where they roll twice the number of sheets onto one cardboard core and compress it so that it will fit into a standard TP roll holder. I imagine that thinner TP makes this goal easier as well.

Frankly, I like the double roll. I only have to change the roll half as much, and they only cut down half as many trees for the dumb little tubes. If one were to complain, I’d imagine that they would write back and say that the made their changes “for environmental reasons”.

Perhaps, meta-x, you should propose that they start selling TP based upon weight. Then we’d figure out what’s going on!

In fact,
I’ve been thinking about this and i think i’m going to head to the super market and weight them all ! I’m going to buy the one that weight more per foot/square.
So the story will continue after the weighting process

Perhaps, like the cyclically shrinking candy bar, there will eventually be a KING SIZE! version of each brand of toilet paper.

If toilet paper manufacturers are really smart, the oversized toilet paper will closely follow the newest king-sizing of candy bars, to accomodate our cyclically expanding asses.
