is it legal for a telemarketer to call your cell?

just a few minutes ago i had a telemarketer call my cell phone. this is a peak time so if it ate up some of my minutes… well, one. long enough for me to tell him that it was a cell phone he was calling.

is this even legal to do? granted i get so many minutes a month, but if i got a call a day i could lose up to half an hour just telling them that. wouldn’t it be similar to them calling me collect? (i know it doesn’t cost that much, but it still costs me some money)

IANAL, but I believe it is illegal for telemarketers to use automatic dialers to call a cellular phone or any other service for which the called party will be charged. There may be other applicable laws too.

they got my number from my college, so i know they weren’t using an automatic dialer. but at the same time i didn’t give consent to be put on to a call list. i’m just trying to go to college, not get bombarded by credit cards.

Nice college. You paying to go there?

state run school. got shut down last summer because of budget problems. not sure if anyone remembers (or really even cares) about tennessee’s budget crisis. the university of tennessee got hit hard.

it’s not that i mind them selling my information. it makes college just a little cheaper and every penny counts. but i do mind the minutes being taken off of my cell phone.

Many colleges do that now Ethilrist.
