Movies suck today because there are no original ideas left in Hollywood. Have ya noticed that a substantial percentage of “new” movies are retreads of TV shows or remakes of other movies? I mean, who asked for Psycho to be remade? Or The House On Haunted Hill? Who thought it’d be a good idea to make Sgt. Bilko, McHale’s Navy, or, for the love of God, Charlie’s Angels and The Mod Squad into movies? And let us not forget The Avengers, The Saint, and the present mutation of Mission: Impossible.
I don’t mean movies suck right now as in the recent few years. Heck, I just got back from Blockbuster and had the hardest time deciding (I walked out with Girl, Interrupted and The Insider). I just mean these past few months–normally, this is when everything picks up and there’s at least one or two movies I’m excited to see. Currently, there really is nothing.
Brief Review of Keeping the Faith: It was a pleasant, interesting, and at-times laugh-out-loud movie, but ultimately forgettable. There were a few odd scenes–but it was good enough that we didn’t walk out annoyed, bored, anxious, or feeling like we’d wasted our money; but of course–we didn’t pay. We used gift certificates a teaching friend had given me.
I don’t know if it’s still playing where you live, but I thought “Ghost Dog: Way of the Samurai” was fairly interesting, absorbing, humourous and not either a “chick flick” or an action/smash-'em’up. Mind you, a friend of mine who also saw it said he thought it was tedious. This friend of mine however once insisted we turn off “The Truman Show” video so that he could watch “Party of Five.”
It seems to me movies come in waves. There is either little or nothing at all to see up at the cineplex, or there are half a dozen interesting/original/watchable movies out and it’s impossible to see them all. Last summer & fall, Being John Malkovich, Magnolia, Dogma, the Sixth Sense, Summer of Sam, American Beauty, South Park and Boys Don’t Cry (among others) were all up at the same time. Right now, (except for possibly Ghost Dog) there’s nothing. A few months from now, there will probably ten good new movies all opening up in two or three weeks of each other.
I’ll agree most movies haven’t inspired me to see em lately. I went to see MI2 just for the motorcycle scene (and promptly said BS to most of it). And before that, I don’t remember the last time I went to the movies.
I did go see Shanghai Noon, and I would definitely recommend it. That is the funniest movie I have seen in a long time, and the whole audience was rolling. Soon as it comes out on DVD, it’s mine.
And I remember a thread awhile ago bout people not clapping after movies anymore? They clapped after that one. Shocked me really cause it’s been soooo long since I’ve seen anyone do that.
