It seems to me that the board is faster the last few days. Maybe it is because I am now using FireFox, but maybe not. Anyone else experience this?
From my POV it is just you. My connection for the boards actually seems slower. In fact I kept getting timed out requests like crazy.
Agreed - last night I got a ton of time out requests, and the board in general seems a little slower.
When the server becomes overtaxed and drops connections, for a short time it zings along, because it has less connections to handle, at least for a little while.
You’ve been fortunate enough to be on the good side of this, just a lucky fluke, really.

Does Ed ever reveal stats for the board? After the recent membership renewal, I’m sure there’s been a certain number of people that have left, so there might or might not be less traffic. (Presumably, there weren’t that many prolific posters that just quit cold turkey last month.)
It would be interesting to see some stats in condensed form - percentage of hits from the US vs other countries, time of day, length of stay, etc.
Gahh… I mean Jerry. Not saying that Ed can’t parse logs, but Jerry’s probably more likely to do it.
Heck, ship me a CD (knowing full well how ginormous webserver logs can be) and I’ll have a whack at making them human-readable.
You have to realize how big of a privacy issue that is…
The two private things we have here are IP addresses and email addresses. Both can be removed with very little hassle from the database image that gets sent.
(Aside from that, neither of those two things are very private to begin with, especially if the SDMB knows them. Your IP address is by definition known to every machine you ever connect to, and by posting here you agree to give every member of the staff access to your email address.
I’m not minimizing anyone’s concerns. I’m just putting things in perspective.)
Right this moment: 607 Users Online (389 members and 218 guests) – that’s about normal for us.

And we have as of this moment 4,776 listings in the subscription database, of which 3,317 are current and 1,459 are lapsed. We have had roughly 250 or so latecomers resubscribe since the April 28 cutoff date.

Khadaji , it must be you, and TubaDiva’s explanation makes as much sense as anything. The hamsters are overworked and when one of them shits and dies, somebody gets dropped or timed out.
I haven’t gotten dropped, but I have gotten a humongous number of timeouts lately. Tuba, is there any chance that SDMB will upgrade its capacity within our foreseeable lifetimes?
