Is it normal to throw away cereal milk?

When I eat cereal, if there’s more than a gulp of milk left, I just add more cereal & then try to finish it all. But I will drink whatever tasty cereal milk is left.

I’m a Paced Cereal Milk Drinker. I drink it, but, I do so as I go along. Some cereal gone? Drink some of the milk (lift bowl to mouth). Recommence eating process. Repeat drink function. When the cereal is gone, the milk is close to all gone. I just slam that.
I also have a glass of cold milk with me during all of this. The drinking of the cereal milk is just sort of a way to keep things on an even keel. Don’t want cereal to get too soggy, or too dry. The glass of milk takes care of the milk-drinking requirements.

I don’t get why causing unnecessary production is wrong though. In a capitalist society we’re entitled to use the money we earn however we like, and if some of us feel not having to worry about the quantity of wasted food is worth the monetary cost, we’re not hurting anyone. If we stop wasting food and only use what we need/go out of our way to eat leftovers before anything else, producers are just going to put less of it on the shelves, not send the surplus off to starving people (which I assume is the point of the moral objection?).

If you have an objection to wasting food that’s fine. I’m cheap, I try not to whenever I reasonably can. But I can’t work out why it’d be wrong.

The idea of drinking the milk after eating my cereal turns my stomach.

Usernames are gettin’ really hard to type out around here …

Wow!!! I love how divisive this issue is. The straight dope is great at finding these things, isn’t it?

We have gone from opinions like “I thought this was a joke thread, who doesn’t drink the milk???” to “The thought of drinking the milk makes me want to vomit!”

I love you guys.

If I have milk left over, I pour it down the drain. I’m not too enthused about the taste of milk in the first place, and little chunks of cereal floating in it make it even less appetising. (My favourite cereals are Cornflakes and Rice Bubbles, they don’t add flavour to the milk as some other posters mentioned.) But my preference is to use only enough milk to barely moisten the cereal, so most of the time I hardly have any left over.

I can’t deal with floaters in my beverages, so OJ with pulp and cereal milk are right out. I try to pour exactly enough milk so I end up with only a spoonful or so left at the end, which is then rinsed out into the sink.

… so why do you eat cereal at al, if you hate chunks of cereal floating in milk?

Is this done before, after, or during peeing the shower?

Here’s the way it works. Pour cereal. Pour milk. Eat cereal. Hmmm. There’s milk left. Better add some more cereal. Pour more cereal. Hmmm. Now there’s not enough milk. Pour more milk. Lather, rinse, repeat.

This is why I don’t eat cereal.

Usually milk left in the bowl means I should have more cereal. I prefer to attempt to perfectly match the cereal/milk ratio so that both are gone at the same time, but if there’s left over milk, I dump it. It is not tasty by itself.

When I eat french fries, I like to squirt out way more ketchup than I actually need for the fries themselves.

What’s that, you ask why I don’t eat the rest of the ketchup afterwards? Because I don’t like ketchup, silly!

Do you not see the difference between a mouthful of cereal that’s been soaked in milk, that you chew up and swallow, and a mouthful of milk with a few pieces of cereal in it, that you drink?

If not, would you drink a mouthful of salad dressing with a few bits of lettuce floating in it?

By the same token, I like cake, therefore, I must love snacking on flour.

I’m currently reading a book in which the narrator recalls an epic battle with his mother over this issue. She wants him to drink the milk, and he finds it disgusting.

I can go either way, depending on my mood, how hungry I am, and what type of cereal I’m eating – the sweeter the cereal, the more likely I am to finish up the milk, although I will always eat it with a spoon rather than picking up the bowl and drinking. I’d say I probably finish the milk 25% of the time, and toss it 75%.

I am an adult. I buy my own milk, with my own hard-earned money. I feel that this entitles me to do whatever I want with it. :stuck_out_tongue:

I try not to pour too much milk on my cereal, so that not much is left at the end, but it’s difficult not to have any left over at the end. And whatever milk is left at the end has been used, so even though it is not consumed it has not necessarily been wasted. (Certainly, it’s not nearly as wasteful as pouring the remainder of a gallon of milk down the drain because I didn’t manage to use it all within the milk’s natural lifetime, but this occasionally happens too.) It has served its purpose, just as the bath water has served its purpose when you’ve finished bathing. There’s nothing wrong with letting it go down the drain.

I was reading in Health magazine that the cereals that are “fortified” with vitamins and nutrients have those just sprayed onto the outer layer, so the milk washes away a lot of it when the cereal is just getting soggy in the bowl. The magazine recommends drinking the milk as to not lose those vitamins and minerals. I drink the milk anyway, I like the way it tastes after being sweetened by cereal. It’s really the only time I’ll ever drink milk.

I used to eat cereal with milk. I do like milk, but I don’t like the way the milk tastes after you’ve eaten all the cereal. It’s kind of warm, with cereal crumbs floating in it, and I prefer fresh cold milk.

Nowadays I eat cereal dry.

I always drink it after. This is a result of my experience as a kid. I went to a wonderful summer camp in the Texas Hill Country and the owner, RJ “Captain” Kidd, used to walk around the dining rooms encouraging us to drink it up. His reasons were I’m sure 3-fold, nutrition, economics and having lived through the Depression he wasn’t one to waste anything. I loved the old guy, drank my cereal milk then and still drink it today.

Captain, I miss the hell out of you.

If there is milk leftover I usually just throw an additional handful of cereal in the bowl and finish. Just drink the plain milk?? Nah, I’m ok with throwing it away. It’s no more than 2 oz anyway.
