Is it normal to throw away cereal milk?

Actually, most people in the U.S. are lactose intolerant.

On average, 80% of Asian and Native Americans are lactose intolerant, as are 75% of African Americans, 51% of Hispanic Americans and 21% of Caucasian Americans.

Agree.

I pour mine out in Leaffan’s shower.

Thirty something years ago, if I had milk left over in my cereal bowl I would add cereal to it and finish it off that way. I really can’t remember the last time I bought cold breakfast cereal for myself.

I’m amused by the fact that you are all trying to apply logic to breakfast cereal and milk.

It’s **breakfast ** time! Are there people whose brains are awake in the morning?

Wrong?

Allow me to elaborate…

We’ll start with the obvious. Milk is about $3/gal. Throwing it away, after using it to “moisten” cereal (worth about 6 cents) is simply economicly stupid.

Once the milk is added to the bowl of cereal, it is part of the “dish”. Would you eat the good stuff out of a bowl of soup then dump the rest? Eat a hotdog and chuck the bun? Or a hamburger?

I’m not suggesting you have to drink the hotdog water, or the grease from the taco pan, as they are more “by-products” of the cooking process and not a part of the “dish”.

Making sense? I’ll give a pass to those who toss the potato skins from bakers. I love 'em, however.

You may feel it’s economically stupid, but to me, not stressing myself out about wastage is worth the monetary cost. I don’t agonise about how many pennies worth of food I waste because I’m full, and when I get hungry again I’d rather not eat something that’s been left and reheated. I’m happier for it.

Also, as we’ve discovered in this thread, for some people the milk is not “the good stuff” involved in a bowl of cereal. We’ve heard from people who eat cereal but dislike the milk, or people who barely add any milk at all.

Well, yeah. If I misjudged a couple bites and end up with a ketchup-y bun end and no more hot dog, it gets thrown away. It’s my hot dog, my bun and my garbage. If you care so much, come over and eat it.

Do the people who think this is a moral issue eat cereal out of five gallon buckets or something? We’re not talking about amounts of milk that are economically significant to people who can afford to put milk on cereal. Not that it really matters how people do or don’t eat their own food in their own homes, but it’s only part of “the dish” if you want it to be.

It’s fine to just leave pennies on the sidewalk, too. They don’t really count anymore.

I like the cereal, I just don’t like the texture of liquid with little chunks of solid floating in it. I don’t like a lot of pulp in my orange juice either; it’s the same unpleasant texture.

I think the reasoning is that if tens of millions of people buy, say, 10%-20% more milk than they really need, that will shift the demand curve such that milk will become more expensive. This will, presumably, make it too expensive for many poor people who might otherwise be able to (barely) afford it. It’s not directly about the milk you actually pour into your bowl.

Also, milk-dumping is weird. Never heard of it before.

Never seen anyone dump milk.
But then I’ve never seen anyone use more milk than they needed for their cereal. Seems kinda sloppy, if you know you’re going to toss what isn’t used. Why waste it purposefully?

I don’t know about others, but I’ve gotten lactose-intolerant as I’ve gotten older. A whole glass of milk makes me sick. So when I have cereal these days (which is not very often), I wet it with milk, but leave most of the milk (which is not even half a glass).

This sounds like an example of a sunk cost. If you’re only drinking it because you paid for it, and you don’t want to “waste it”, and you don’t really like the taste of the leftover milk, what’s the point? You’re basically only drinking it for the sake of drinking it, and you’re not really utililizing it in anyway. It’s a freaking tablespoon of milk, for crying out loud! It’s not like we’re dumping entire gallons done the drain.

So if you’re only drinking it because you don’t want to “waste it”, well, you’re already kind of doing so, if you stop and think about it. It really doesn’t make a difference whether it goes down the sink or down your throat at this point. Use less milk.
(And yes, I dump the milk, since there’s very little left when I’m done. But then, I don’t eat cereal all that often anyways)

If a cow (or other lactating mammal) isn’t milked regularly, then the milk builds up and it’s very uncomfortable. I speak from experience as someone who breastfed her kid. And it’s not just uncomfortable, it can cause complications. So, even if a lactating animal is sick or medicated, the milk has to be drained even if it’s thrown away.

In the case of cows and dairy goats, though, if there was a sudden worldwide drop in demand that seemed permanent, then the dairy farmers could let the animals go dry by not absolutely stripping out the milk each time. If the glands aren’t completely drained, then the body responds by making less milk. If the glands ARE drained completely, the body responds by making more milk. Any milk that couldn’t be sold immediately could be turned into cheese, which will last quite a bit longer. The excess dairy cows would probably be slaughtered for meat and hides.

Damn, I didn’t know that could happen. Can you still eat other things that happen to have dairy in the same amounts as before?

Yes, but probably not as much as when I was younger. I can eat cheese and ice cream as long as I don’t go overboard (binging on a pint of Baskin and Robbins Pralines 'N Cream ice cream is now out for me unless I want to suffer). I have read that milk has the most lactose of milk, cheese, and ice cream, so that fits. I also have developed acid reflux as I’ve gotten older, so that probably is partly to blame. A lot of food that didn’t bother me when I was younger bothers me now.

I ate some cereal this morning and had some milk leftover in the bowl. In honor of this thread, I drank half of it and dumped the other half in the sink.

Throwing away a ketchupy hot dog bun end? Ketchupy? That’s wrong on two levels-

I always drink the cereal milk. Come on, you guys! It has sugar in it!

Wow, pretty interesting. I knew lactose intolerance ran high among black people, but I didn’t realize the same was true of pretty much everyone except whites. As a non white person, I’m sure glad I dodge the lactose intolerance bullet because I freaking love milk. The idea of eating a sandwich without a glass of milk on the side causes me great heartache.
