I think you understand my point, which was that if we were talking about genocide we’d have to include NYC and seeing as I didn’t, we weren’t.
On the other hand your point about the actual Holocaust is a good one, insofar as discussion of semantics goes. Speaking of which ‘sevastopol’ tells you nothing about me, it’s just a cool word, don’t you think? Say it out loud with Russian inflections, then you’ll have to agree with me.
Although on reflection the history of the Crimean peninsula is captivating: The Crimean War: A port on the junction of Aisa Minor, Russia and Western European influence and in ancient times a farflung Greek colony.
Did you know the famous charge of the light brigade occurred there? It is an interesting history because the war is a prototypical example of the then global powers conducting war by proxy. I must read up on it again to remind myself. You might do likewise, if the interest takes you.
However no, by that name I neither represent anything, nor does it tell you anything about me.
So there was really no need to call me “faux” - anything. You could have just asked. Admittedly discussions about individuals on board tend to be dull don’t you think?
Lemur866, PaulFitroy, do NOT refer to posters as username88 in this forum. (For those not in the know, “88” is used to identify someone as a nazi or neo-nazi, the 88 standing for the 8th letter of the alphabet, or HH for Heil Hitler.) Repeatedly calling a poster a name not his own that s/he does not accept is being a jerk.
This is a topic that has some, er, extreme viewpoints being expressed. Keep it civil or take it to the Pit. Advocating a “military strategy” of genocide targetted towards either side is going to make us watch you awful close. We do have rules against hate speech.
goes a million and a half lives beyond “an eye for an eye.” Only our hardest liners whispered of nuking Havana or Moscow when suspicions arose immediately after the assasination of President Kennedy of Cuban or Soviet complicity. And your described desecration suggests an anger I haven’t seen in you before and looked to me last night like you were beginning to develop “racist or genocidal attitudes towards Arabs.”
This was not clear to me as being entirely your point but as I have long liked and respected you, though not always agreed with you, I can accept it as truth. I apologize for not giving you the same benefit of the doubt you gave me by assuming I was whooshing you.
It makes no difference who is “barbaric” and who is “peace-loving,” Paul.** Oppression is oppression, and the Palestinians are being oppressed, and there is absolutely no reason why they should meekly accept it.
The question is a distraction. Why focus on history, when genocide is taking place on your doorstep, as a matter of your government’s policy, in full view of the public eye?
OK, next question - do you consider Israel’s actions in the Territories to be a form of genocide, comparable to the Holocaust? You seem to be implying this.
(Play along with me. It’s a game called Saying Exactly What you Mean.)
Interesting read here. I’ll toss out a few thoughts if I may.
Seven nations did not attack Israel in 1967. They massed troops within thier own borders as a show force and Israel attacked pre emptively.
In 1947 and 1948 Israel targeted civilians, women, children and destroyed entire towns and villages resulting in the destruction of a culture and creation of a refugee problem that they have yet to solve.
If the Palestinians did have some sort of military support to rival Israel perhaps they would not need to use guerrilla tactics. There are consequences of oppression.
Israel has been in direct violation of Geneva Convention and “General Rules of War” longer than the opposition. Why should there be a double standard?
The portayal of Muslims and Arabs as barbarians and blood thirsty is ignorant and uncalled for.
I am in favor of some, any peaceful resolution that recognizes the rights of the Israelis and Palestinians. I am bothered by what I see and hear in the US media which is reflected in this topic here. There is a huge bias in favor of Israel while the suffering by thier hands is largely regarded as somehow justified. The Palestinians have little choice as to the weapons and delivery and tactics. They are ill equiped to fight a war but you can not expect them to just lie down while thier culture is slowly detroyed over 50 years. Israel does have a choice. While I do not regard the guerilla methods used in the car bombing as unfair, it does display the usual disregard for those nieghboring countries and any intentions of peace with those countries.
