Is it ok to bomb an abortion clinic?

justinh,

In the United States, abortion services are provided legally. Few people who oppose the legality and practice perpetrate acts of terrorism and destruction because such actions are futile in that they will have no effect on the laws of this country. Only the occasional nutjob ever thinks that he can affect law through violent action. The rest of the anti-abortion community seems to recognize that this country of ours is built in such a way that it need not bow to the whims of the violent and the aggressive. The majority of the anti-abortion community takes action in support of their beliefs in accordance with the well-established procedures of the land. They vote. They protest. They write letters. They argue. They know that these are much more effective means of precipitating change than violent coercion. To echo Beadalin, not only is terrorist action morally reprehensible and ridiculously dangerous, it is also remarkably stupid an ineffectual.

JThunder,

I understand now your point about the typical usage of the word “abortion.” I apologize for being slow on the up-take.

You and I will have to agree to disagree, I think. I do not see the tremendous difference in the acts of aborting a pregnancy in physically threatening situations and aborting a pregnancy in psychologically threatening situations. Obviously, there is a difference, but I don’t think that the recognition of that difference clears up the issues. To my way of thinking, that difference does not form the line between acceptable and unacceptable medical procedures because I can still se a valid need for abortion services in either situation.

TYMP,
bear with me for a second.

you have a terminal disease and choose to be hybernated (cryogene…?) til they find the cure. well in 2101 you wakeup cured. hooray. and your savings accounts make you filthy rich. hooray again. and now people live to be 200 years old. saints be praised.and viagra is in the water. yeah baby. buttttttt there is a population problem because people don’t get sick and live for so long. so they have a policy of turning in children less than 1 year old (because they aren’t citizens) to be cremated unless the parents can pay a tax. the idea is the child is born and tested for the first year and if the parents determine that it is not going to be a spectacular specimen then poof.
what do you do?
write letters, fire off emails. vote a bunch of times. complain at the grocery store line? but its the law so what can you do? I think if you really believed that they were butchering little kids you would be outraged and prodded to action.

Sure, justinh, when I am outraged, I take action. However, I like my actions and efforts to be effective and not wasteful or stupid. In the ridiculous situation you’ve described, it would be impossible for me to physically prevent an entire society from operating as they have chosen. Impossible, so I wouldn’t try. If I disagreed with what was happening, my most effective method of precipitating change would be to discuss the issue with others in order to turn them to my way of thinking. I would not throw away my own dignity or honor in a useless terror campaign. I would not do that here and now, and I would not do it in a ridiculous fantasy world.

Yup. Vote bunches of times … in every election.

Tymp,
“ridiculous fantasy world”?
how far is this from China today? there the test of a baby’s worth is its sex.
if you answer that in today’s China:
“oh not today, well ok maybe just in some areas, …”
the point is that its not that ridiculous.
ok lets change the fantasy world a little. there is no vote because the world has stabilized so that nothing has changed in a long time and a King rules with an iron fist to keep everybody content and secure. “Change” is an evil word because everybody remembers or hears stories of the volatile 2000s. so there is no way to change the situation. What do you do?

You seem to be moving in the direction of equating anti-abortion terrorists with revolutionaries. I think that’s batty, but who am I to judge? In this new fantasy, our dashing and virile hero witnesses oppression at the hands of a tyrannical governing power. Will our brave hero speak up and rise up against the rulers he so despises or will he waste his time and life in a ridiculous terror campaign that will do nothing to change the law of the land or the opinion of the public but will most likely hurt innocent people? Tune in next time. Same bat time. Same bat station.

This is a waste of time, justinh. Rather than asking me, why don’t you sit down and try to dream up a situation in which terrorism would be effective and moral. I’d love to read it, as it might well be the first time in all of human history that such a situation would be presented. Good luck.

tymp,
you miss the point of this thread. I have not done a good job.

Is the abortion issue comparable to the other issues that convservatives argue with liberals? I would think that if you are arguing issues then you would concentrate on the important ones and relegate the trivial ones to the background. It should’nt be just a check in a box on a list of issues. I can’t argue with a moral person who votes for an abortionist because of all the other issues. capital gains tax breaks dont equate to abortion.

2015 update : I have finally recorded that “Let’s Go Bomb an Abortion Clinic” song. (Note: It’s meant to be sarcastic, NOT to encourage people to actually bomb an abortion clinic.)

It’s here: http://www.rogermwilcox.com/audio/abortion.mp3

Good for you.

Now let’s lock this baby so we can all go home.
