I was thinking about the dwarf oranges and lemons I have heard of, which apparently allow us northerners to grow citrus fruits in suitably-constructed greenouses. I suspect they have to be big greenhouses, since these are trees, after all, but I got to wondering… what about coconuts?
My exercise trainer at the gym talks about the health benefits of coconut meat and juice, and introduced me to “baby Thai” coconuts, which you apparently have to go to Old Chinatown to find. Of course, coconuts rely on long-distance transport to find their way to Toronto. But what if someone blew up one oil terminal too many and fuel prices rose to the point where it was too expensive or time-consuming to ship coconuts to Toronto?
Would it be possible to grow coconuts in a greenhouse? I am assuming that merely building one large enough wouldn’t be a problem. Are coconuts pollinated by some jungle insect whose effect can’t be replicated? Do coconuts wither under short winter days? Do they need some kind of tropical soil or sea air? Lots of UV light?
