Is It Possible To Program A Shortcut On A Direct TV Remote?

Mrs. Homie and I like to watch subtitles on some shows (hearing is becoming an issue for us as we age), but not on others (I can’t stand those scrolling subtitles that don’t keep time with the dialogue, like on live sports but also on recorded shows like Survivor, WTF?). Turning the subtitles on/off on my Direct TV remote is cumbersome, to say the least. Does the Direct TV remote have shortcut capabilities? I don’t see anything about this on Direct TV’s website?

Subtitles are generally a function of the TV, not the DirecTV box. You can turn on subtitles with the DirecTV remote because it also acts like a universal remote so that you can use one remote control to control everything. It would probably be a lot easier to turn on and off subtitles using the remote control that came with your TV. There may even be a dedicated “CC” button on it - there’s your shortcut!

I believe what you want is a universal remote that does ‘macros’.
A remote macro is a sequence of signals you program for a single button on the universal remote.
You might need to program one button to turn the CC on and another button to turn it off.
I’ve had a universal remote with macros for years and will never be without one again (entertainment equipment keeps getting more complex!).

It depends. If you’re using an HDMI cable, I believe you have to enable the closed captioning on the cable/satellite box. See this FAQ from the HDMI people.

And if you do a Google search including the type of cable/satellite box or the type of remote control, you might be able to find instructions for programming a button for closed captioning, even if it’s something that DirecTV doesn’t publicize. (I was able to find instructions for adding a thirty-second commercial skip feature to the Motorola DVR that Comcast provided to me.)

If you just use the sound on your TV (not any home theater) check the TV’s settings (with the TV remote) for closed captioning. There may be an option to have CC automatically turn on when you press MUTE. You can than set your DirecTV remote to control the TV volume and it will do the same with it’s MUTE button.

You may have a different remote than me, but there is an easy way and a hard way on my setup.

Here’s the easy way:
Press the “info” button.
Press the right arrow 3 or 4 times until you get to “CC”.
Press the down arrow twice to get to the second Closed Captioning option.
Press Select.

This becomes second nature after doing it once or twice.

I’ll give this a try, thanks. It’s still a few steps, but it beats Menu>Settings>Display>Closed Captioning>On/Off

I used to do it this way too until I discovered jharvey963’s method. Now it’s not a big hassle. I wish they would have a single button for it though.
