Is it safe to dye my cat?

My boyfriend and I decided that my cat should be a different colour. We think that burgandy would be pretty nice. Is there sometype of hair dye out there that we could use that wouldn’t make him sick if he groomed himself? We are going to bleach him out white with hydrogen peroxide first. I have seen poodles dyed hot pink so I think there should be something available.

He is such a cute kitty as he is. He is fairly docile and will let anyone do practically anything to him. He is such a “sucking need hole” to use the term found in the BBQ pit in one of those evil threads. I think he will be even better if he was burgandy.

Oh, for those of you who don’t know, he is a Cornish Rex which means he has very short, wavy hair and looks like he smokes crack. He looks similar to Mr. Bigglesworth except his hair is wavy. It pretty much sticks directly to his sides. Best of all he doesn’t shed any noticeable hairs.

If I had a persian cat, I would shave him/her like a poodle. I like having the unusual looking pet. It will be fun.

I anxiously await input.

i dyed my mouse, ** jim fink III**, blue.

he functioned quite well until he decided to eat his children.

his wife, jim fink IV, found this act most dishonourable and decided to eat him.

but yeah, the dye didn’t seem to trouble him.

Trout, I don’t think mice clean themselves, though…

Sqrlbaby, I’d wait for an expert opinion if I were you.

dogs don’t groom themselves fantatically like cats do. Therefore you can die a poodle pink, and it won’t spend the rest of it’s life attempting to lick off the dye. I’m just wondering how you plan on doing this. Have you ever attempted to bathe a cat? I assume a full dye job would be even less pleasent for all three of you. Don’t dye your cat.

Dyeing your cat??? That’s so gay…

Sorry!

Why do you think he’d look better in burgundy?
Doesn’t the current colour go well with the furniture?

I don’t mean to sound hostiel, but I find the the whole
idea soooo bizarre…

it is no more bizarre than choosing a black cat over a white one.

colour preference.

his may be burgundy.

how is that gay?

Perhaps not so bizarre to you, but some pet owners (like me) like to think them as animals, not as accessories. Then again, perhaps it’s only me and my inhibitions.

I don’t think the cat is going to like it (giving it a bath), but as long as the dye is safe, I see nothing wrong with it except bad taste. Each to his own…

God and/or evolution strived for eons to produce something as unique and beautiful as a cat and you think it’d look better burgandy?

Burgandy? A distinctly unnatural colour for a cat.

give me a break.

Tinting your pussy is relatively safe, Dying your cat however is not.
The bleach could be harmful to his skin, and most “bleach” that is used to lighten to a white stage is intended for off the scalp use.
Poodles who are white already are tinted with food color, and not hair color. You also risk blinding the critter, since color on the hair around his eyes may drip. Even the fumes can cause blindness, that is why there is a warning label telling you not to use the stuff on your eyebrows.
Why not sew kitty a nice burgandy caftan instead?

Canthearya, yes mice DO clean themselves, moreso than cats.

When I had two albino girly rats they were almost impossible to tell apart, so I went out and bought some purple hair dye- manic panic, all natural stuff -to put on one. It stained the fur a little & that was it. It was completely gone in a few days. If you were to do it that’s what I would use, but I imagine rat fur isn’t much different than cat fur, so it might not even work at all.

Regular hair dye would likely be toxic, and it would probably irritate the skin as well. The best you could get would be a stain from something natural-ish.

What color is the cat now? If it’s a beigeish or orange you could probably get a burgundy stain using red kool-aid powder (mix it with white vinegar and it works better).

That’s all I can think of right now.

He’s probably just doing this so he can have a better sig line: “I color my pussy”.

Nope. I don’t want to change my sig line.

Anyway, he is currently a smoke grey and white. I was going to bleach out his coat with Hydrogen peroxide first which I believe I mentioned before. It doesn’t irritate his skin and I have used it before since he gets the occasional scratch. I know I have to blow dry him afterwards which he would hate though.

Also, I didn’t think about the koolaid dye. My little sister used to dye her hair with koolaid. Burgandy just looks like it would suit him best.

This is driving me crazy—it’s “burgundy!” It’s my favorite color, or I would have let that go . . .

It’s not the dye, it’s the bleach that’s the problem, as others have said. You would have to sedate the cat to bleach OR dye it, and the bleach could suffocate, blind or poison her. Also cause terrible skin reactions: burning, itching, peeling.

I fully understand your need for a color-coordinated cat, but unless you want to buy a full-body kitty wig, you’re out of luck.

Whether or not it is safe to do, it is certainly not nice. If you love your cat, don’t abuse it like this. (Or any other way, for that matter.)

Manic Panic, as Star suggested, should be safe enough. I had a white rabbit when I was 16, I decided he should be green since his name was Lucky Charms, so I used Manic Panic and dyed him green, it lasted for about a month or two, but I only used less than a quarter of the jar so I just touched him up, he was fine.

Thank you so much for posting that. I was SO tempted, but figured I’d let discretion ride for a change. It is not easy to have a mind that is constantly in the gutter.

Thank you again.

In college, a kitten knocked over some Fire Truck red hair dye at a friend’s place. It got on its underside. The thing looked like it got hit by a car, and from that point onward, I refered to it as Roadkill, as that is what it looked like. I’m not really certain what happened to the cat, as I moved shortly afterwards, but it didn’t seem to mind
