I’ve had this problem before and generally changed the MB, CPU and Ram together. This user is strapped for cash so I want to sort it out cheaply.
We’ve all had this, one day the PC boots normally next day after it’s turned on the PS runs, fans turn etc but there is no beep from the MB, display on the monitor or lights on the keyboard. Now seeing as if you hold the power button for 7 seconds it then shuts down, does that mean it’s the MB not the CPU? I mean the soft switch goes directly to the MB.
I’ve disconnected all of the peripherals, and swapped out the ps, no change.
Any idea’s for narrowing down the fault?
As the machine isn’t booting I haven’t bothered including details of operating systems etc, it’s a Gigabyte 85661FX-MP motherboard
Hm… it could be a host of reasons… seeing as the computer doesn’t get past the POST phase, it is definitely not OS related.
Have you ever tried an out-of-case build? (Or is this a pre-built computer?)
This step allows you to remove every variable from the computer itself, so you can figure out exactly where it all goes wrong…
Seeing as how you’ve switched the power supply, I’d guess it’s motherboard related. Can’t be more specific than that, however.
I had a problem not too long ago when I replaced a CPU heat sink (fan went bad); the computer would never get to POST and it just sat there and clicked. Turns out, I screwed up spreading the thermal paste thoroughly, so it was due to the heat (automatic shutoff). My point in relating that little anecdote is that, “motherboard related” doesn’t necessarily mean “replace the motherboard”. I wish I could be more help…
When in doubt…
Really, it has so many functions. When weird shit happens, it’s more often the board, just because the board is responsible for so much more. Pull the cmos battery before you leave for the night. And check any cables for nicks and shorts.
I detached the peripherals and paralelled another PS so that’s about as close to an out of case build as you can get, no change.
I removed the cmos battery, no change.
If it was a nicked cable from the PS then, in my experience, the PS wouldn’t fire up.
Just in case I disconnected the IDE cables, no change.
I’ll replace the MB first.
Thanks anyway
