If anything, I believe the stereotypical family is proven by Randi’s real family rather than Steve’s surreal family- Steve’s family seems more real and believable than the UberCoys.
All right…all right.
elmwood, I never said that overweight people should not be on TV.
And for the second time, I “get” the title.
If you say it’s funny, okay. If you say the humor derives from the family’s reactions, not from his behavior, also okay. If the viewers are supposed to be rooting for him, not cringing along with them, then that’s actually a good thing. Peace out.
What the fuck is with the people who don’t watch the show being offended by it? Get a grip. If anything, it’s giving a snob her due. Sheesh, lighten up people.
Do the moose!!!
Mooooooooose!!
It would be offensive if the point of the show were, “Eeew! Look at this guy! He’s fat and gross and this nice person has to pretend to marry him! Grody!”
That’s not the point of the show, from what I’ve seen.
The show is making fun of the “bride” and, to a lesser extent, her family and friends far far more than the fat guy. She comes off as a judgemental, shallow, unpleasant woman who would never give him a chance because of his weight. Well, that plus “The Moose”.
If anything, you could argue that the show is attempting to show how we all look really stupid and lose out on opportunities when we buy in to stereotypes.
Moose.
from a great post (mine) on the original MBFOF thread:
I feel bad for Randi’s family. Esp the dad who seemed to be the only one to give Steve a fair shake after he was acting gross.
I kinda hope they’re in on it.
>>The show is making fun of the “bride” and, to a lesser extent, her family and friends
And WHO would humiliate their family (and break their hearts) on TV for MONEY???!?!?!
BEST. REALITY SHOW. EVAAAAAAAAAAR!
Steve isn’t really THAT fat (others have already mentioned the Big Fat Greek thingy), but physically he is not the type shallow Randi would date and her family knows it - THAT is the important premise of the show! The show isn’t mocking Steve’s appearance or personality, it is making fun of the shallow, stick-up-ass, snooty Coy family.
I don’t understand those people with such strong aversion to the show when they haven’t watched it. Sheesh.
The difference between Randi and her family and me is that if I were hanging out with a guy who acted like Steve I, as a guy who can be as competitive as anybody in the guy stuff that pisses off Randi so much, would see his behavior was a challenge to see who could gross out that hostess the most.
And Steve’s right–she IS hot but I think she’s about as likely as Randi to date him after the series is done.
But that could be my own stereotypes showing.
Not sure what it says about me, but I would LOVE to date Steve!!! He would fit in perfectly with my family.
I kinda figured that would be the sequal, a big fat obnoxious woman.
I guess they don’t make stuff like The Andy Griffith Show anymore, do they?
I’ve never watched the show, but I think I have a good understanding of the premise. I have nothing against the guy hired to be the obnoxious fiancé, but if I had a daughter and she accepted a job where the job description was that she would have to lie to me for an extended period of time and make the whole thing public, said daughter would be on my shit list for quite a while.
Damn, Im glad you
re back.
