Is it Too Risky to Travel for Christmas with Blizzard and Very Cold Weather?

I won’t change my plans for winter storm Elliot, mainly because there is no such thing; the weather channel names storms to make them sound more ominous. Only hurricanes are officially named. Not denying there’s bad weather acomin’, just the silly name aspect of it.

I was supposed to go away tonight. We’re only getting rain; lotsa rain, has already started & expected to be 1-2" tonight, ending sometime tomorrow when we’ll get hit with the frigid temps, which means you could have some flash freezing on the still-wet roads. Tomorrow was also expected to be a high travel day; I saw an estimate that ⅓ of the US population was expected to travel this weekend. I might go tonight, like originally planned; otherwise I’ll probably go on Sat morning to avoid the nastiness of extra traffic & poor conditions tomorrow.

We’re gonna make open some Christmas pancakes for breakfast on Sun morning. If you can’t get them, may I suggest Irish Toast. It’s kinda like French Toast but you substitute the milk for cream, Bailey’s Irish Cream. Seriously!
Added bonus points for the vanilla-cinnamon variety of it, too.

I’m looking at various cameras on I90/94 from La Crosse to Madison and visibility does not look too bad (a lot better than I would have guessed) . Still, I’m happy not be travelling far today (I have the day off – I should get some groceries and such but could do that in town)

Currently in VA and my flight to Chicago has been delayed a couple times. Expecting a cancellation, but I guess we’ll see.

We planned to spend a day with nearby relatives, and probably could by tomorrow what with the melting, but my lovely wife is still COVID+ so we’ll stay home.

We were supposed to drive from NYC to Toronto. The weather forecast kept on getting worse and we kept on trying to leave earlier; by yesterday (Thursday) afternoon we’d decided to leave by 7 PM, drive all night and arrive early morning since blizzard conditions were supposed to start around noon. And then one of our kids came down with a bad cough and cold; we took him to urgent care and it’s the flu. So we said no to the overnight drive, may travel on the 26th instead.

I am sorry that people are stuck in airports with long lines, missed and canceled flights, and all that.

But look at it this way, if this is the worst thing that happens to you ever, you are lucky. You are inside with heat. Yes you will be vastly uncomfortable, but that’s better than dead, stranded in the snow.
