Apparently there was a book by Robert Randolph called "You’ll Never Spa In This Town Again (this is a link to the author’s web site)"** which described, in part, sexual encounters the author had with the star. Now it looks like he’ll be publishing another book devoted solely to this topic. In the meantime, he claims that numerous gay men have come forward to say that they have had similar encounters.
Personally, I couldn’t give less of a shit what his sexual orientation is. But unfortunately there is still a lot of latent (and not so latent) homophobia going around (must be all the flouride in the water, or maybe those damned chemtrails). However this breaks, it’s going to be a big story - certainly for the tabloids but I can’t see even the MSM avoiding this.
If it’s true, I hope he gets out in front of it. I don’t know much about the entertainment industry, but even if something like this doesn’t hurt his marketability, I can’t see it helping much either. If it’s not true, then I hope he makes the author his economic slave with defamation law suits.
Best guess, no, he’s not gay. But ultimately I don’t really care. He’s been in a few movies I like, and that’s about as far as my interest in him goes.
I care, but only to the extent that his fear of being exposed is what is keeping him in Scientology (same with Tom Cruise). If he came out, they would no longer have the blackmail material and they would have one less shill for their cult.
All we have is the word of some guy selling a book that you can’t even get on Amazon. We have no way of knowing if his claims are true, and even if his claims are true – that the actors he identifies on his website patronized a certain spa that is known to be frequented by gay men – we have no way of knowing if these men actually participated in sexual activity. The book isn’t out yet and there isn’t even a chapter to preview. I can certainly see the MSM ignoring this. It also seems to me that Randolph is engaging in behavior that is potentially libelous, so I don’t expect his book to see the light of day, frankly.
That being said, a person’s sexuality is his or her own business. It’s not Randolph’s business, it’s not my business, and it’s not your business. Assuming that Travolta is, in fact, gay or bisexual, that’s between him and his wife.
As someone who knows very little about John Travolta or Tom Cruise (I don’t want to sound like I am one of those Dopers who is too highbrow or refined to care about popular culture, I just haven’t seen a movie with either Travolta or Cruise for 20+ years) I have also heard this same thing, here on the SDMB and maybe other places as well.
Where did this bit of common knowledge come from?
Is there an ex-Scientologist in-the-know that has stated this?
If you define gay as having sex with men, then yes I would say he is. The problem is a sex act does not a homosexual make.
I am a gay male and I have never had sex with a woman, but almost all the gay men I know have had sex with females, does that make them straight? Of course not.
Travolta most likely is happy in his marriage and gets some on the side, that’s what I’d speculate, but so what? It’s not like it doesn’t happen in every day life, so why should a celebrity be any different?
I’m surpised with camera phones and the like MORE people aren’t caught in compromising situtations, that is except for Michael Buble :D, who had his fat butt plastered all over the Internet
I really don’t care. I’ve heard that there are rumors about him, but he’s never so much as pinged my gaydar. Though it sounds like he would actually be bi, if he actually does have sex with men sometimes.
Years ago, I knew a girl from Jamaica who insisted JT was gay on account of, he’d come to St. Maarten with a bunch of guys and wore a Speedo. I’unno. That in itself doesn’t have to indicate anything, but she saw him in person and I didn’t.
I don’t know and don’t care. Unless he’s preaching the Evils of Homosexuality, in which case I do care because that’s an especially disgusting variety of hypocrisy.
I assume the implication is that as long as he is closeted (assuming he is) the Scientologists can blackmail him into continuing to support them. That sort of thing would certainly be well within their typical range of behavior.
The principal Scientology activity is “auditing”. This is done with a device called an “E-Meter”, which is a very primitive (though expensive) device for measuring the resistance of skin. The person being audited holds a pair of metal cans in their hands, and the auditor reads the meter. The meter is supposed to read a person’s “emotional state”, but it really reads whether one is sweating. One of the earliest types of auditing is “word clearing” where one’s reaction to specific words and phrases is measured.
In practice, this is much like being hooked to a “lie detector” and being interrogated. The information gathered is saved in a file for use in further “auditing sessions”. Many former Scientologists have been threatened with material in their files (see: “Dead Agenting”) to keep them in the group and paying.
I could give a shit if someone is gay. I only care if it is being used as blackmail by an evil cult.
Oh, okay so they’re supposedly afraid that the Scientologists will out them? Okay, I had it backward, I thought he meant someone would out them TO the scientologists.
I don’t care either way. I was just curious as to what the other poster meant.
