Is porn getting "Nastier"?

Inspired by this thread on the potential effects of kids viewing internet porn, it made me start thinking about my own experiences with porn, and more specifically internet porn.

When I was about 14 or 15, the internet finally became affordable and practical in NZ- ie, a 56K Dial-up connection didn’t cost $100 a month- and after the inital novelty of playing games online and chatting to people had worn off, I started looking pictures of nekkid women, on the theory that it had to be easier than going through the whole “Pretending to be 18 even though everyone knows you aren’t” thing with the Singh family at the local dairy in order to buy a Penthouse magazine.

Anyhoo, it turned out that yes, there were indeed pictures of naked women on the internet (Giggity Giggity Giggity!, to quote the yet-to-be-created Glenn Quagmire :D)

Most of them were pretty tame- nude poses, and not really any more unconventional than anything available in magazines available at the corner store.
Naturally, swapping 3.5" disks with naughty pics on them was quite a popular pastime amongst the computer owners at high school.

I finally got some bootleg VHS cassettes a year or so later, and while they were a step up from naked pictures, they weren’t anything “unusual”- just attractive people screwing. Nothing especially nasty, just fairly straightforward action (with the usual girl/girl, threeway, and orgy scenes you find in porn films, of course)

But lately, I’ve noticed that porn seems to have gotten quite a bit… nastier, for want of a better word. Especially Internet Porn.

Where the net’s always had a reputation for having Albino Lesbian Midget Clown Goat Porn and so on, it’s been the sort of thing you really had to look for- it wasn’t there for all and sundry to see.

Nowadays though, it seems a look at most porn sites- especially those with content from Russia- reveals some rather unorthodox and nasty porn, involving things like the women being described as “bitches” and “sluts” who are being tied up and having baseball bats shoved up their ass as “punishment” for some reason or another, or women being make to perform fellatio until they choke, or screw some guy old enough to be their grandfather- amongst other things.

The thing is, it’s obvious that the women involved aren’t enjoying it- and not just in a “tuning out” way that everyone does at work, but they’re obviously just waiting for the shoot to be over so they can get their fistful of roubles and maybe buy something to eat (or another bottle of vodka or whatever).

And I’ll say it’s had the very interesting effect of convincing me to return to DVD porn, with better production values, better sex scenes (in general), and the knowledge that, by and large, the people involved are doing it because they want to. (Sure, there’s always exceptions, but I’m talking about the sort of stuff you can buy from any semi-reputable Adult Shop here).

In general, I’m seeing a lowering in quality of 'net porn, and IMO, it’s becoming a lot more misogynistic and, dare I say it, degrading.

Sure, porn’s never exactly been a bastion of equal treatment of all (“It exploits men by exploiting women, hence it exploits… people!”, as Ron Jeremy said in Orgazmo), but I’ve noticed that whereas the stuff you got on the net used to be (more or less) the same sort of stuff you got in videos and magazines, it seems nowadys net porn is a lot nastier, and not really the sort of thing you’d want impressionable people getting exposed to without the necessary background “talks” first.

It just seems easier to find the nasty stuff these days, too. Time was, looking for anything really unusual required a dedicated effort on the searchee’s part. Nowadays, someone just has to type a keyword into a search engine and they’ll get umpteen million results for all sorts of things ranging from the tame to the “My eyes! the goggles, they do nothing!” level of Naughty Pictures. I’m not convinced that’s a good thing- certainly, sex needs to be discussed openly without hangups IMO, but a 12yo probably doesn’t need to know that it can also involve midgets, goats, and dominatrixes- at least not until they’re old enough to realise that porn isn’t reality and that a healthy human sexual relationship doesn’t need to involve Lara Croft, Japanese Tentacle Monsters, and an Alsatian…

Anyway, anyone else out there noticed this trend? Thoughts?

What?

It’s pretty simple, There’s more porn more readily available, so providers can now specialize and cater to different tastes. The tentacle monster genre may not have been big 10 years ago, but I doubt that there were fewer tentacle monster enthusiasts back then, I know my tastes haven’t changed significantly, just that there wasn’t enough of them with internet connections to justify the then-higher cost of distributing it. Now more viewers and providers have access to more bandwidth, so they…provide it, and view it.

It’s nothing personal, I was just using Tentacle Monster Porn as an example of something that most people would consider “way out there” and unusual.

It’s not my thing, but I know plenty of people enjoy it, and more power to them for it.

Otherwise, you make a good point that it could just be an economy of scale thing- but I’m getting the impression lately that the “wierd” porn is actually more common than the “normal” porn, at least on the net.

No hard (hah! ) evidence, just a general feeling (hah! again  ), though…

Hey, let me give you an example. A few years ago, my holy grail of holy grails was to find and own a copy of the Injou Kyoushi series of live action tentacle monster movies. I didn’t know of anyway outside of calling someone in Japan to obtain a copy. Now, with the magic of the every obscure dirty video store being on the internet, I own all 5 movies in the series, including the Injyou Gaiden sequels. The market is big enough to specialize. If it wasn’t for the internet I’d be roaming the streets trying to find a real girl to fool around with, and they always get skittish after I show them my suit…

Goodness, I hope I haven’t squicked out any of my prospective future Doper brides with these posts. Let me just be clear that some of the above account may be a little embellished for dramatic effect.

It’s not any nastier, just there’s a shitload MORE of the previously fetishy, obscure niche sexual acts. Cross-cultural porn, like bukkake, is easier than ever to find these days, too.

If anything, porn is getting more cutting edge in technological home delivery, direction, editing and creation.

Wait, wait, hold up a second…

Live action tentacle monster movies?!

What did they do? Train an octopus or something?

Sorry about the hijack. Regarding the OP…uhhh…I…ummm…agree…errr…ahhh…with the other…uhh…posters…

Live action?!!!

I’m fairly certain that there’s some extremely low-budget animatronics involved. Artificial articulation - stuff like that.

Although it would be funny if they were forced to have a disclaimer that said “No octopi were harmed (or pleasured) in the making of this film.”

You can google the title (it seems to go under “injyu kyoushi” and not injou like I used) for some screenshots. Let’s just say that they were a lot less cool that I had thought they would be.

No, I can’t. I don’t have very many Sanity Points left nowadays. :stuck_out_tongue:

Yes, thank God.

Aah, someone else who loves the CoC…

to the OP - I’d say that the nastier stuff has gotten more readily available, sure, but Euro stuff like Private and Color Climax has been around since at least the 70s, and some of it could be quite bizzare (transexual porn, Golden Showers etc). However, I’ve been made aware of a nasty streak to a lot of stuff made recently - people like Max Hardcore and Rocco, for instance. They treat women really badly. Hate to think of any kid picking up their notions of sexuality from it.

Is the debate whether it’s happening, or does the OP presume it’s happening and want to debate if that’s bad?

Because I think it is getting nastier, but I don’t care.

I’ll try it. Reading the King In Yellow didn’t effect me any.

Back To The OP

I agree with the fine Hawaiian man with the many appendages. Playboy and other magazines targeted the largest market of porn buyers- straight men who wanted vanilla porn. The internet allows specialization. Much of that specialization isn’t nasty, just not popular- smoking fetish, a particular hair color, porn made to look retro, porn involving women swimming etc. But, the costs are low and the fetishes that vanilla people find nasty can turn a profit now as well.

The 70’s had a reality show first, Passage Through Pamela. Pamela was a pre operative transexual. The porn company agreed to pay for her surgery in exchange for Pamela appearing two hard core films, one before and one after.

A flip through dad’s old Playboys reveals a puppet porn film (the name escapes me) from the same era.

There is Japanese tentacle porn that is hundreds of years old. I also have a picture somewhere of an ancient Greek pottery piece which includes an image of a man and a goat. I don’t think there are any new ideas… it’s just a bit easier for us all to access them now.

Nope. We’re just more exposed to it, thanks to technology and the mass media.

Look at Greek Myths. Zeus used to turn into bulls and swans and mate with young virgins lying in the fields, or bathing in the rivers. Or stories about monsters raping young women. Seriously, human sexuality has always had it’s freaky side.

Not that there’s anything wrong with that!

:smack:

I can’t believe I forgot that. Woodcuts, paintings, netsuke, etc. of woman and octopus, some by the great masters of Japanese art, these aren’t done as simple depictions of myth or folklore either. They’re porn by any definition. Google ‘dream of the fisherman’s wife’.

Queen Passiphae had Daedalus build a hollow cow so that she could get close to the White Bull and have sex with it. This wasn’t even a god in disguise. It was just a bull.

Oh my! And let’s not forget the urban legend that Catherine the Great was killed when the horse she was fucking collapsed onto her. It didn’t happen, but the fact that people believed such a thing possible, well, just goes to show you.

I definitely think the OP is right about it getting nastier, but I think easier access is only part of the explanation.
Sure, the goat fucking and such have been around forever, but it seems the OP is asking whether the general body of porn on the net is getting nastier, not whether it’s breaking any new ground. On that point, I think it’s clear that the type of porn that is considered the typical, common, most readily accessible on the net is indeed much more hardcore and nastier (for lack of a better word). What was racy when I first started seeing porn on the net – Playboy-level nudity and the occasional full insertion of penis into vagina – would barely get any attention these days.
As for why, I figure it’s because porn creates an ever increasing need for something more. What turned you on at 14 (boobies!) isn’t gonna get you going at 30. And what you thought was wild at 30 (butt fucking!) might seem boring at 40. And so on and so on.
I do think that saturation plays a big role. The more you see something, the less impact it has. Two hot people having intercourse can be very exciting, but once you’ve seen it over and over for years, you start asking “What else you got?” Then the old guy fucking a girl with a jack-o-lantern on her head seems curiously entertaining. And then that gets old, so the woman who can take a bowling ball up her is worth a look…
Before the internet, it was hard to get that much saturation without spending a LOT of time looking for porn. Now it’s so accessible you can bore yourself in minutes.
