Is "Poster Boy" a true artist or just a destructive douche?

Poster Boy and what he does

It’s clever, but I think it’s kind of destructive.

Just based on the video description, I’d definitely say the latter. I have no tolerance for anyone who would go around destroying other people’s stuff for shits and giggles.

Watching the video doesn’t change my opinion.

The ads in the subway are all stupid bullshit. I’m glad to see someone doing something interesting with them. That being said, I wouldn’t feel sorry for him if a subway cop or transit authority person busted his ass - he knows the risk, it’s all part of the hustle.

Vandalism. But I don’t think I can work up that big a sense of outrage. These advertisements are intended to be disposable so it’s not like the destruction is ruining something timeless.

I also don’t think I’d call him a “true artist”. I’d say he has an interesting hobby.

I don’t know. I willing to entertain the notion of what he does as being art. It’s vandalism, too, of course, but I kind of find the recontextualization interesting, if not a bit gimmicky and a bit ham-handed in execution. I’d have to think about it some more, and see some more of his work.

He’ll be working for an agency within a week.

Reminds me of this Daffy Duckcartoon!

I’m an artist but I still vote Vandalism.

I’ll grant that it’s art, but it’s really crappy art. The only thing that sets it aside from cheesy bad Photoshop work is the fact that it’s illegal. He probably thinks that makes him “edgy”, but really, it’s just crappy art that happens to be a crime.

The two options you offer are not mutually exclusive.

There also seems to be a false dichotomy going on here.

all crappy art is a crime.

It’s a slightly more sophisticated version of drawing glasses and a beard on a poster. 5% art, 95% vandalism. But I can’t get much past a meh about it.

His execution is still a work in progress, but I like the idea. I really dislike advertising, generally speaking, and subway ads in particular are an ever-present annoyance. If I ran across Poster Boy doing his thing, I’d probably watch and give him some applause.

That being said, it is illegal, and I’d shed no tears if he was caught and arrested. Hell, getting arrested would probably be a boon for his career as a street artist overall. Street cred needs to be earned, after all.

Mostly vandalism, but advertising is out of control so…this is a bit like making art in parks with the pigeon shit that’s already on hand.

I like it. There’s no permanent property damage since these are temporary ads anyway. Most of it is a lot more interesting than the original. And it probably makes the original ads more memorable than they would have been.

I like it. Its a step above the usual level of subway vandalism of drawing penises and bad words on the ads anyways.
