is reading in the dark really bad for your eyes?

when i was young my mom always told me reading in the dark will ruin my eye sight. when i went to college my roommate told me her mom said it too, but someone else told her it’s not true.
so is it??

I think that the general verdict is that it will not actually damage your eyes. You may experience eye fatigue, but if it is too dark you just won’t see the page. Think about it, you look at the inside of your eyelids for almost 8 hours every day! (Well, some do, personally I sleep with my eyes open. Same idea anyway.)

more like 10 hours in my case thought!

As phage said, it’s not true.

It’s a nice little lie to kiddies to get them to sleep. Just like “Eat your veges/crusts/medicine/ so you can get stronger/curly hair/healthy”.

Damn it, I gotta start collecting these parenting tips now!

I remember reading about the idea originating with an advertising executive who was hired by a lamp manufacturer. He was a very influential ad man who had some far reaching affects on the way we live, but I can’t remember his name.

If you were reading for instance playboy in the dark then you might be ruining your eyesight in other ways
