I sometimes read other conservative posters’ posts to learn why they think as they as they do. Sometimes it’s just a matter of not making changes to the social or cultural fabric too hastily (Starving Artist’s schtick), sometimes it’s a matter of legal precedent (Bricker’s), sometimes it’s a quirky interpretation of the laws, sometimes it’s a hatred of taxation, etc. But with “Retards, Shodan” it’s always the same: general, free-floating hatred. His brand of conservative, not terribly uncommon, mainly seeks to assure himself that he is superior to others, and seeks always to teach his inferiors (of whom there are very few, even among conservatives) and never to learn from his superiors or equals, whom he maintains do not exist. Bricker, for example, currently has a thread up beginning with the four words that would make Shodan’s head explode “I Was Wrong About…” Bricker can be a weaselly, casuistic, disingenuous prick, and often is, but he is a prince compared to Mr. Retards.
FuriousGeorge, look at this very thread alone. I’ve given some specific evidence, including examples of my points, and data on the number of uses or a specific phrase. You’re talking about wetnaps and bananas. Hell, with that level of content, you may as well start signing off each post with “Regards.”
Woah, woah, woah–“collectively”? We’re not a collective, as evidenced by the lack of your assimilation. I made no claim about “collectively.” In fact I think I said there are idiots on the left around here.
Assume that idiots are a pollyanna-ish 10% of the population. Assume this board is 90% lefty. That means for every right-wing idiot, there are 9 left-wing idiots. (I don’t think those numbers are right, becaues of confounding variables, but they’ll illustrate the point).
Someone who stakes out a position might get attacked by an idiot on the other side.
That means that if you stake out a right-wing position, you’ll get attacked by nine times as many idiots as if you stake out a left-wing position.
That doesn’t mean that:
a) it doesn’t matter whether you’re an idiot yourself (since folks who aren’t idiots will only get attacked by the idiots, whereas folks who are idiots will get attacked by everyone).
b) there’s some sort of leftist collective who thinks in the aggregate rather than one by one.
c) it’s okay to be an idiot on the right, since there are also idiots on the left.
Shodan gives the impression that, because there are leftist idiots, his behavior of being a rightwing idiot is acceptable. It’s not. He should strive to be a voice of reason from the right, not a Clothahump look-alike.
The conservative brain drain has long been a problem here. Does pitting Shodan help or hurt that process? In what way is the board helped in any modicum by your pitting Shodan? Is mindless partisanship on the SDMB reduced or increased by a personal attack on someone you disagree with?
Ignore him like any sane person. You’re becoming the thing you hate.
Indeed, Stuart. As long as you believe it, it is true. I’ve heard self-delusion is a wonderful state of mind. I defer to your obvious experience in said matter.
Seriously? I can’t pit him lest we scare off the intellectual conservative might of Shodan?
It’s irrelevant to that process. I’m pitting a retarded lying scumbag, not a conservative.
Do you seriously think his behavior I was pitting was merely my partisan reaction to someone I disagree with? Seriously? He’s a fucking idiot who threadshits all over. That’s what the pit was made for.
I took it to a pit thread. I’m not ruining every thread I post in like he is.
Having "conservatives " around just for the sake of having conservatives around is not a desirable goal. There’s no value added by Shodan or Starving Artist. Is the goal of this place to "have some representation across the political spectrum " or to fight ignorance?
Sure, I would honestly love having a reasonable, sane, nondouchbag conservative contingent here, but in their absence there’s no benefit to settling for a substandard alternative.
Each element of that statement can be supported empirically. Except the last. I do want elucidator to like me, and I wish that Senor Beef wasn’t a Browns fan, so that we might have gotten along. Otherwise, I don’t care if people like me. Apart from elucidator, senorbeef, and red fury. And ruthless efficiency. And trinopus. Elucidator, senorbeef, red fury, ruthless efficiency and trinopus. And GIGObuster.
Okay, let me start over. Elucidator, jsgoddess, fear, surprise, ruthless efficiency, fear itself, GIGObuster, trinopus…
The fact remains that the active posters in GD and the Pit are at least 75% knee-jerk, lockstep liberals and a good many of the remainder are even further to the left than that.
And even that small minority of non-lefties is too much for cretins like Hentor. He wants a nice safe little echo chamber.
One of me, a dozen or more of them, and they are still afraid I have them surrounded. Boo hoo.
We’ve already covered this. In the rather narrow view of the Usual Suspects, it is not possible to be a voice of reason from the right, because the right is always wrong and unreasonable by definition.
I post reasonably - it gets ignored and people lie about how I only snark. People snark at me, and they get back a good deal more than they want in return - you people fixate on that and whine about it and complain about it.
Face it - the reason - the only reason - I get called a troll and dishonest and mean and all the rest of it as much as I do boils down solely and entirely to one thing. You don’t like my politics.
Tough shit. I am not intimidated by the monkey screeches, none of your poo-flinging can get to my monitor, and it’s not going to be a nice cozy little circle jerk where you get to make fun of me and not get it back just as hard as you pitched it, or perhaps a bit more.
Sure, that’s why there’s a left wing board that’s the equivalent of Free Republic, right? And that’s why there’s all kinds of left wing radio talk shows like Rush Limbaugh’s show, right?
I see this type of reasoning a lot from conservatives. It boils down to “everyone thinks the same way I think”, and I don’t mean the content of their thoughts, I mean their thought processes.
Conservatives tend to see everything having just two options: right or wrong, black or white, left or right, up or down, us or them, etc. They erroneously believe that everyone else sees things that way too, but that others have simply taken the “wrong” stance on an issue or the wrong position on something or just joined the wrong side in a conflict.
When they get together, they mostly talk about how cool they are, and how uncool the liberals are. So they assume that when liberals get together, they do the same thing.
They want to wipe out liberalism (whatever that is) so they assume that liberals want to wipe out conservativism.
They want to be rich capitalists, so liberals want everyone to be poor communists.
The list goes on and on, etc., ad nauseum.
They’re wrong, just like they’re wrong about there being a war against Christmas.
To quote Rob (from Get Fuzzy): “I think you think everyone thinks like you think. You’re wrong.”
Shodan, most of the other conservatives don’t get attacked for their positions, per se, but because they are unable to clearly articulate their positions and/or their positions are dependent on ridiculous or non-factual concepts. Bricker and Martin Hyde are prolly the most able conservatives on this board, and they don’t get the same flack that you or SA or Clothahump get because they can actually come up with explanations for their positions that are not only well-written but well-reasoned. The only time Bricker starts getting piled on is when he falls back to his “come see the liberal hypocrisy” postings. I can’t recall Martin Hyde ever getting drubbed, but then I’ve never seen him try and pull that card out of his sleeve.
In this thread you aren’t being attacked because of your politics or your positions on the issues. You’re being attacked because you fail utterly to back up your positions with anything resembling coherence, facts, or logic. You post links that don’t say what you claim they say (a trick that you prolly learned from Sam Stone). You post much that is a variation of “come see the liberal hypocrisy” even tho that’s not ever going to sway anyone to say “oh well then I guess it’s alright then” (if anything, it just makes people say “well clearly I was wrong not to bitch about the liberal doing it”; was that the reaction you were after?).
If you think you’re right about something, make the argument. Even if it goes over a lot of people’s heads, make the argument. Even if you know that a bunch of people will just ignore it and crow about how much of a jerk you are, make the argument. The positives far outweigh the negatives of such a course of action.
I don’t like the politics of many, many people who post here, righties, centrists, and Democrats, but I tolerate them to the extent that I can learn from them (at least, which positions they they espouse and why) but more to the point, I like some of them (as people or at least as posters) just fine because of the degree to which they strive to express themselves courteously and intelligently.
I despise you, however, and skim over your posts generally, because you are a self-absorbed twit who has nothing to add to any discussions of anything. I just think “More bullshit” when I see a post of yours, and absord as little as I can while scrolling past it. If you ever change your narcissistic ugly manner of posting, I’m afraid I will never find out, so please do continue in this manner. It reassures me of my dismissal of most right-wing positions as “intellectually bereft, and usually racist” being right on the money.
You get called a troll because you troll almost every thread you’re in. You get called dishonest, because you link to stuff that doesn’t support what you say it does. You get called a coward because you run like a bitch and stop posting in a thread when you are shown to be wrong. You don’t have integrity.
Although, I’d be angry too, if I believed the nonsense misinformation you believe. Because you’ve internalized right-wing lies, you’re constantly enraged and feel you need to lash out. But the trouble is, you’re angry because of phantoms and bogey-men.
You’re not complicated, you’re sad. And your ideology is so extreme it is wrong by definition, that’s no reflection about the right in general. It’s a reflection of the ultra-extreme fringe right who you believe without thinking.

I honestly believe that this is really what you saw when you read my post.
There was a guy once in therapy who would wear a hat around that said “Fuck You.” It was protective, since it was much more palatable to believe that people were reacting negatively to his hat than to something about himself that he had less control over.
No, Air America went under, because not only are liberals pussies, their rants get boring after a while, even for True Believers.
No, it’s just politics.
You think Bricker doesn’t get Pitted and snarked on and called names? Whatever gave you that idea?
No, that’s the reason all right.
I do, all the time. But you are demonstrating the reason why it doesn’t help. You apparently are incapable of reading something with which you might disagree. It’s a common flaw hereabouts - don’t read anything except when I snark, and then complain that I don’t do anything but snark.
You are confusing “I don’t like your argument” with “you didn’t make any argument”. They aren’t the same thing.
