Is skipping the 'other' BC pills bad for you?

I’m too old and smoke too much to actually use them, but the question came up on another message board.

Some women are coming up with tales of large blood clots, other women are saying “Hey, athletes do it all the time!”

Is there anything inherently wrong with a woman forcing away her menses?

I had a nurse practitioner tell me I could go ahead and do it if I wanted to, but not to go for more than three months without a period. But I haven’t tried it yet, what with not being on the pill at the moment.

There’s supposed to be a brand coming out sometime in the not-too-distant future where you take the real pills for three months, then one week off, then three months on. I WANT THOSE.
