Is Smoking all that great?

[minor hijack]

I’ve known many people - like wolfman and Gazoo - who take up an hour or more each day at the smoking area. Nearing the end of twelve years with the Navy, I began to wonder the other day how long I would get off if I asked to take all of my breaks in a row. Then I thought about it: 1/24 of twelve years = six months!!
I should have been discharged three months ago!

Nicotine addiction was covered pretty well in the Consumer Reports book on Licit and Illict Drugs. (Don’t look for the book, BTW. It was published in the early '70’s when the jury was still out on cocain. When the jury came back Consumers Union yanked the book off shelves like crazy)
They drew the example of a heroin addict: after detoxing and getting his/her life turned around a former heroin user can get through life without wanting another fix.
A former smoker? Well, 10 years could go by. And it’s after dinner and the coffee is served. Right there is a setup for a cigarette desire.
