Is standing outside a prospective employers office illegal?

I am wondering if the following is illegal in CA (Los Angeles, specifically). I want to stand on the sidewalk in front of specially selected locations, wearing a breadboard, promoting my website (www.sethwantswork.com), in the hopes of getting a job. I’d also like to hand out resumes, that I’ve condensed down to business card size.

Places I plan on hitting include Paramount studios, Fox Studios, etc.

I’m sure that the various security guards that work within the borders of places I’ll be standing near won’t be thrilled by my presence, and I want to know where I stand.

I think that this falls under the freedom of assembly, etc. and as long as I’m not on private property, is completely legal. I don’t know if I’m considered a “pamphleter”, and if I need a permit, etc. though. Could they consider me a one-man parade?

Does anyone have any insights?

Seth

I don’t know if it’s legal… but pretending you get hired at one of these places, do you really want to be considered as “that guy… the one that stood out front and begged for a job”?

I imagine a lot of people wouldn’t give you a job based on principle…

IANAL etc. but as long as you’re not blocking the sidewalk and you’re on public property you should be OK. I question the effectiveness of your job search strategy.

You must have missed the part where he said he was looking for work in Los Angeles.

I don’t think it’s illegal any more so than the people you see holding signs on street corners directing you to stores in strip malls and things of that nature in Southern CA. I’m also not sure I agree with fatdave. While like him I would think it a little strange someone would advertise that way, I would also be impressed that someone wanted a job that bad at my place of business and would at least take a second look at your resume.

That said, you’d still need to be qualified for a job I currently had open. Oh, and before you start sending resumes to me, I work at a defense company, not a movie studio…and it’s not in LA.

Well, at this point, I really wouldn’t care about “begging”, I consider it marketing myself to an audience that I otherwise couldn’t reach. If it gets me a job, it is more than I have now.

Sorry for the double post.

I have an MBA from a top school, and an undergraduate degree in Radio/TV/Film, as well as 2+ years of experience on television shows. I’ve also been a financial planner, and I’m in Mensa. And I’m not a jerk, either.

I can’t get an interview, much less a job, for ANY job, anywhere, paying any amount of money. I’ve exhausted my personal contacts, and I view sites like monster.com as worthless as there are too many people with more experience than I that have gotten laid off recently.
