As I understand it, he used his time on the witness stand to try to throw her under a bus*. It doesn’t strike me as a giant leap that he’d have only a very small amount of concern for her continued affluence after he passes.
*Feel free to correct me if I’m ovesimplifying, here.
Why no perp walk? He should have been handcuffed and led away. Then sit in jail until bonded out or sentenced. He should have been shown what it feels like.
Really? I’ve never heard of a Senate race being stopped because of some issue realated to a candidate. Come to think of it, I’ve never heard of a Senate election being stopped at all. Has the governor or anyone else actually taken any actions to make this happen?
And, if Stevens resigns today, and is elected next week, isn’t he a Senator again? That might even be a clever way to avoid expulsion – “I DID resign my seat, but the people of Alaska wouldn’t have it. They brought me back.”
Of course, if he loses, that would turn out to be a poor strategy. Ihave seen some stories saying his numbers are way down, and giving the Dem a much better chance at the seat.
Chefguy, it seems to me that the above alludes to the fact that Palin resigned her gubernatorial position to run for VPotUS, and thus would just be “Joe Average” after the election should she and McCain lose. I haven’t heard this before - is this true? I was thinking that after the election, she’d return to being the governor of Alaska should they lose. Or are you saying that should they lose, she’d return to governor, then put herself forward for the senate seat?
(I have to admit to being slightly thrilled if she’d have no elected position after Nov. 4)
Ted returned home yesterday to an adoring crowd, telling him that it was all the other guy’s fault and that he just made an honest mistake of trusting someone he thought was a friend. I think what he means is that he trusted him not to turn state’s evidence in return for a lighter sentence. Fuck you, Ted.
Technically he said he has not been convicted of anything, which I guess is technically accurate. Once the jury delivers a verdict it is up to a judge to impose judgment and sentence. This has not yet happened. He cannot file an appeal until it does, so if he files an appeal it will mean that he has in fact been convicted.
Yeah, he needs to be sentenced for the trial to officially be over. There have been cases where people die between the jury’s verdict and sentencing, and they get to be buried with a clean record.
