Finally! This corrupt ball of sleaze finally got his! Senator Ted Stevens, (R-Greed) was blatantly and defiantly corrupt and it was beiginning to look like he would never get so much as a glove laid on him. But you can fuck some of the people all of the time, and so forth.
Gloat, gloat. Neener-neener. Har-de-har-har-har!
Please feel welcome to join in unseemly celebration of a greedy asshole getting his! Huzzah!
Sen. Ted Stevens has just been indicted in the ongoing corruption scandal that’s rocked this state for the past couple of years. The FBI has already managed to send several of our state legislators to prison for being in bed with the oil industry, and has a few more in their sights, including Sen. Stevens, his son Ben Stevens (former State Senator), and our lone wolf (and resident fool) Representative, Don Young.
To me, this whole debacle just reeks of reflected White House disregard for the law. Whatever daddy does, junior does. The arrogance of these people knows no bounds, and I look forward to the indictments on a national level.
I just started a thread over in IMHO, if a Mod wants to merge them. Stevens has done a huge amount of good for Alaska, but he’s let his arrogance override his honesty and now will pay the price. I actually like the guy on a personal level, but have no use for pols who feel they are above the law. Now if they can indict Don Young, I’ll do a happy dance naked in downtown Anchorage and post it on YouTube.
The Ted Stevens?
The man that would drill a wildlife preserve at all costs and thinks those opposed to such a concept are crazy?
The man that strongly supported the bridge to nowhere?
The man of the Internet Tubes?
That Ted Stevens? elucidator, please enjoy your dance.
So…how does this affect his candidacy in November? Will he decline to run or will he cling to his office until he’s forced to resign? His likely replacement, Gov. Palin, is having her own abuse-of-power problems right now, isn’t she? Who’s the likely replacement candidate now?
For the first time in decades, he is facing a serious primary contender from within the Republican party.
It may come as a surprise to some, but I actually voted for him once. His Senate seat was so secure, no main stream Democrats would run against him, and the only candidate willing to go up against him was apparently mentally ill (Theresa Obermeyer).
Not to apologize for our current CinC, but corrupt politicians acting above the law go much further back than the birth of our country, let alone our current president’s family’s rise to power.
When Jim Traficant was sent to prison, did you regard this as a reflection of the Democratic Party or the Clinton Administration at all? Or did you look at his deeds as uniquely his - reflecting his own twisted priorities.
Traficant was in power for quite a while, and that’s doubly true for Stevens. He’s far more a force in Alaska than Bush. And while I think there is quite a bit to investigate both places, I think it would be a mistake to say what Stevens did reflected any White House priorities. The evidence indicates that Stevens cared only about Stevens when it came to stuff like this.
Right now, back home in Pennsylvania, there’s a massive scandal brewing involving legislative staff being forced do do political work on state time and with state money. People will probably go to prison over this one. Does it reflect on Democrats, the party responsible at the time? A bit. But recent history shows that Pennsylvania Republicans, given half a chance, would do the same thing. One of them remains out on conditional release - he mailed a white powder to himself marked “anthrax” and said his opponent did it. Crazy stuff. And none of this has much to do with Democrats or Republicans in other places.
If you can show some connection here between Bush and Stevens besides them both being Republicans, serve it up.
Hugh Betcha! Of course, I dance like a white boy, but ain’t nobody watching! So boogie over here, and a-boogie over there, and boogie-woogie up the middle…
I am, of course, (snicker) mindful of Moto’s admonition that this has nothing (chortle) to do with partisan affiliations, and my respect for Republican integrity (titter) remains unaffected.
What else is needed ? The Republican Party is and has been for a long time the party of scum. The party of corruption, bigotry, hypocrisy, fanaticism, stupidity, and ignorance. Being a Republican isn’t some neutral characteristic that just happens to people, like being black or born in Ohio - it’s a choice, a choice that reflects the nature of the person that makes it.
Is the Democratic Party run by good people ? No. It’s run by greedy, corrupt, cowardly politicians, the same sort you see everywhere. But the Republicans are worse than just that; they are the cesspool where everything bad about America has concentrated.
