Is the current uproar over Secret Service failures itself a threat to the President?

It seems like every day now there’s a new report over something the Secret Service did wrong. (The newest one is, they let an armed security guard with a criminal past get in an elevator with Obama. Nothing came of it.) Lawmakers from both parties are furious about the string of screw ups. And they no doubt should be, however I’m starting to wonder if this scandal might, on its own, endanger the president or others the Secret Service guard. Pretty much anyone who has held a job anywhere knows that beaten-down, dispirited employees make for a poor workforce. When your employees are demoralized, it is inevitable that the quality of their work will suffer. I’m thinking this is not a situation we want for the president’s bodyguards.

That is a very clever argument for sweeping things under the rug. It’s bad for morale. I’m going to have to use that someday.

If they are beaten down and dispirited to the point that it affects their performance, then they need to be replaced. I realize how unfair this sounds. But some jobs are more important than being fair.

I am not recommending this as a general approach to performance management, but sometimes it is better not to give a second chance even if it isn’t your fault.

While we’re at it, let’s also not tell all those air traffic controllers about all those plane crashes.

There’s no crying in baseball.

Is putting rookie agents in charge better than keeping beaten down/dispirited veterans? It might not objectively be the case.

You would be replacing people who aren’t doing their jobs with people who **might not **do their jobs.

The Secret Service is not only made up of agents. The physical security of the White House is mostly handled by the uniformed division of the Secret Service.

Since there seemed to be multiple problems that have popped up in different facets of the service, both uniformed and protection detail. That points to an overall leadership problem. I don’t think anyone wants to fire the entire rank and file and replace them with rookies. But some of these incidents are impossible to excuse.
