Remember that song by Sara McLachlan?
Here are the lyrics from her site
I always thought it was and would become angry and frustrated when, during 1999 and 2000, it was popular to play the song during funerals. It was like these people only listened to the chorus and ignored the rest. It would be very appropriate if the person had killed themself, but it does not work for your seven year-old that was hit by a car.
For example:
I always thought that this passage was about someone who had just slit their wrists letting the “memories seep from my veins” until he is “empty and weightless” so that he might “find some peace tonight”.
Well, am I wrong? Did anyone else think it was about committing suicide? Did Sara ever specifically explain the meaning?
I’ve always thought this song was about drugs and it’s use to escape the hardships of life.
Definitely not an appropriate song for funerals in it’s full sense.
But more appropriate than “At Your Funeral” by Saves the Day, I think
I believe I heard “Angel” was about drug abuse as well. This site claims that the angel in the song is drugs, anyway http://philos.wright.edu/dept/eng/blakelock/rockweb2/CDrevs/sarahmc/sarahmc.htm
Sarah Maclachlan herself confirms that the song ‘Angel’ is about drug use, in an interview segment that forms part of the enhanced materials on the CD.
She was inspired to write the song after watching a profile of some-celeb-or-other who had ‘escaped’ into heroin use as a response to the pressures of fame.
Whether this makes the song appropriate funeral fodder, or not, remains open to debate.
