Is the NAACP a racist concept?

Well, as I stated, it still says it on their logo and on their website.

But I get the brand recognition thing. And why they are leaning more toward the acronym.

Not unlike KFC, who do not want the negative connotation of fried in their name.

mmm

Nevertheless, it can hardly be characterized as hurling a baseless accusation, especially when he expressed a willingness to be convinced otherwise.

Again we disagree.

National Association for the Advancement of Colored People.

Or, put in other words:

National Association for the Advancement of People of One Race.

And now, back to the definition of racism/discrimination:

Treatment or consideration of, or making a distinction in favor of or against, a person or thing based on the group, class, or category to which that person or thing belongs rather than on individual merit.
mmm

Is it your suggestion that it’s racist to move the people of one particular race up to parity? Not to advance them past the norm, just to move them up to the norm in terms of income, justice and so on?

Why or why not?
Also, your signature looks like you’re tunelessly grunting after each post. It makes me think of Sling Blade.

All nonwhites are one race, now?

Don’t see much Hispanic or Asian strength in the NAACP.

So? I thought we were only supposed to care about the literal meaning of the organization’s name.

So you’re arguing that when black people want equality it’s a form of discrimination against white people. (I somehow sense that it’s white people you’re worried about and you’re not concerned about the possibility that black people will become equal with Inuits.)

The only way your argument could be any more racist was if you started talking about fried chicken. Oh wait…

I was taught in the US that the term “racism” means ethnic prejudice coming from a group in power. I interpret “power” broadly, to include a combination of political, cultural, and economic hegemony. According to this viewpoint. Euro-Americans can (but don’t have to be) be racially prejudiced and racist, while African-Americans can (but don’t have to be) racially prejudiced, but they CAN’T be racist, by definition.

I’ve heard the term “racialist” used by White Pride/Nationalist advocates, and my understanding that this is intended to draw the focus from power and exploitation to pride, identity, and cultural preservation. We can argue whether or not it is a weasel term, but it seems reasonable to me.

There is not an eye-roll smilie big enough to do that comment justice.
mmm

So the NAACP is against affirmative action ?

This.

Putting aside inequalities that may or may not be a historic artifact (we could have a separate debate about the fallacy of “equality of outcome” vs. “equality of opportunity”), it is fundamental human nature to form affinity groups.

Is the Ancient Order of Hibernians racist? So why can’t black folks have a self-improvement oriented affinity group?

The NAACP is not a racist organization, but it is obsolete. Blacks have not been discriminated against since the civil rights legislation was passed over forty years ago. Currently whites are discriminated against through affirmative action policies.

I can’t see that the NAACP is a racist concept", but I could see making an argument that some policies they support (ie, certain forms of Affirmative Action) are racist.

:confused::dubious::eek::rolleyes:

Possibly just

How are blacks discriminated against?

Although far, far less than 50 years ago, blacks still suffer discrimination in housing, employment (hiring and promotion), and criminal prosecution. (Since I have noted that the last is a favorite topic of yours, I will further explain that blacks often are subjected to harsher penalties for the same crimes and are still subject to the sort of harrassment exemplified by Driving While Black surveillance, along with the excessive targeting of blacks in regards to drug laws despite strong evidence that drug use is roughly equal as a percent of population among both blacks and whites.)

Sometimes, the NAACP gets it right, providing legitimate defenses against genuine discrimination, and sometimes they get it wrong, claiming that discrimination has occurred when the facts do not support their conclusions. Given the nature of humans, (i.e., a strong propensity for tribalism), that is hardly shocking news. On the other hand, ludicrous claims that “whites,” (as a class), are being harmed by Affirmative Actions are just silly. A few whites probably have been so harmed, but any major social or economic effort will inflict unjust harm on scattered individuals and if Affirmative Action disappeared, tomorrow, the infliction of harm would simply shift from scattered whites to greater numbers of blacks.

Who taught you that?

I’ve heard it from this very board in racism discussions. It was totally new to me, too.

Me three.
