Is the new Tom Hanks movie "Castaway" an updated version of "Robinson Crusoe"?

I hope so, because I loved Robinson Crusoe, as well as other well-written survival stories. I think Tom Hanks will kick ass in the role. I didn’t know why he had lost so much weight last year, and hoped he wasn’t getting sick. Didn’t know it was for this part.

DON’T tell me this movie was made just to capitalize on the recent “Survivor” popularity – bleh.

Actually, it strikes me as more similar to the Stephen King short story, “Survivor Type.”

I saw the trailers for this movie (before "What Lies Beneath – ugh!) and I am waiting with bated breath for this movie to come out so I can see how, in this year 2000, a scheduled airliner – a cargo plane, but it seemed from the trailer to be a major line, not the air equivalent of a tramp steamer – could go down, one man survive, and NOT BE RESCUED. Maybe the moviemakers will give us a plausible scenario. Maybe.

Actually, when one stops suspending their disbelief, this is the main problem with “Gilligan’s Island” too. 1964 and a ship with reasonably important people (a professor, a movie star, and a business owner) aboard completely disappears, without wreckage or bodies found, within three hours – and radio broadcasting range, as we saw with the radio in every episode – of Honolulu? Methinks the Coast Guard in the REAL world is a little more diligent than all that.

I’m kind of hoping it’s an update of “Gilligan’s Island”.

If it is Robinson Crusoe, they should do a Forrest-Gump-style computer image magic to have Rosalind Russell as his co-star.

A couple of months ago on a 4 hour flight, the guy next to me was telling me what a great film this was going to be.

He was a digital FX animator for a studio and did a lot of work on it. At first I was thinking, “Yeah, right. I’ll bet every film he’s ever done is just fabulous.”

Turns out, he didn’t much care for many of the films he’s worked on, many of which I’ve seen, and quite often we agreed.

Actually, this movie was well into filming (not to mention preproduction) before the whole Survivor phenomenon.

We should only hope so–now that would be a sight! However, I suspect they will exchange the drugs and self-cannibalism with spiritual uplift and self-awareness. And no Friday to boss around.
