I’m sure some of you have seen the picture of a young man that seems to have had the front of his face blown off. It has been attributed to a motorcycle accident, and to a nasal M-80 accident.
I am of the opinion that the picture is fake.
Can anyone corroborate this for me?
For those that are wondering, the picture can be found at the infamous Rotten.com…
Haven’t seen your photo but I did see a documentary about a teenager who failed to commit suicide by blowing his head off with a shotgun. He was a Judas Priest fan and had a suicide pact with his friend who succeeded. The parents sued the band for subliminal suicidal lyrics. He looked like Mr. Potato Head (or ArseFace from the Preacher comic); apparently he placed the shotgun under his chin pointing straight up instead of at his brain and he survived. IIRC, he ODed on morphine months later, probably not wanting to live like he was.
If I may just step in for a moment as moderator? I’d just like to request that nobody post an actual link or URL to the picture in question… The OP already has enough information for anyone who really wants to see it, and if it’s as gross as it sounds, I don’t think that we want to make it too easy to find.
While the Anarchist streak in me almost posted it, I decided that it would be nihilistic to do so, and I would rather my first trip to the pit be over something a little more significant.
Nice hat, Chronos.
I think I’m gonna have to check with my father-in-law, who is a semi-pro celebrity faker to determine what he thinks…
Keep it comin’ tho… we’ll figure it out eventually…
I dunno, I’m kind of skeptical. Like Sue Duhnym said, he looks awake. But with that kind of damage, shouldn’t he have bled to death? Also, I find it odd that he has no marks on his neck and shoulders. I mean, I don’t know exactly how he was injured, but you’d think there’d be scrapes and bruises elsewhere on him. Even if he had a jacket or some other kind of protective clothing on, he still should have had some bruising.
I’m trying to reassemble his face in my head, but it’s kinda hard… Good God… it’s a good thing I have a strong stomach.
I’m not against pictures like that being a part of the internet. I feel it’s almost a human right to be aware of such things. The people that publish them often don’t have good reputations but another set of photographs on this same site is surely only there because these particular people were prepared to take a risk in the name of justice.
Why don’t they provide more information of the sort Tristan is looking for though? I would like to know what happened to the person in the photograph - so would everyone else that sees it. I almost consider that a right, too.
I’m not really sure as to what to think of the pic. Although it looks realistic enough, I find it difficult to believe the patient would still be conscious. The massive amount of trauma must have resulted from a reasonably major sort of impact, therefore I’m thinking along the lines of “Audrey K”, he should have some more visible signs of other injury.
And the fact that he’s still conscious is one that amuses me. Someone who’s undergone massive amounts of trauma…unless he’s up to the eyeballs in every kind of narcotic analgesic available, in which case, I don’t think he’d be really capable of sitting up like that~!..would have a very altered conscious state, from some form of shock…primary form being hypovolemic
People can survive a lot. In terms of facial injuries, there was a whole category of World War I vets in France called the “broken faces,” those with horrific facial injuries who managed to survive. Much of the field of plastic surgery dates to efforts to cope with these types of war injuries.
There was a bit on this in a great documentary on the Universal horror flicks that I caught Halloween weekend on AMC or TCM. A better place to look might be Sander Gilman’s new book on the history of plastic surgery.
I accidently looked at that picture once. I have not been to the site posted above since and I doubt I will ever go there again. I usually have a strong stomach for this sort of thing but I didn’t eat lunch the day I saw that picture. In fact I wish I hadn’t opened this thread because now I’m thinking about that horrible picture again. I just post this as an additional caution that the picture is really disturbing.
On a positive note that picture has made me very seriously reconsider ever getting a motorcycle helmet that isn’t full face.
There is another picture, I believe it was at Rotten. It allegedly depicted a person who was on PCP and cut his skin off his face and fed it to his pit bull. Has anyone else seen that, and able to confirm it? It sounded a little “to” bizzare for me, but that picture looked authentic.
For what it’s worth, the Snakes section at Rotten is fake. Of course I can’t remember where I saw it, but I have seen a credible debunking of those pictures as doctored. I thought it was at snopes, but I can’t seem to find it there now.
An aunt who is an RN saw it and says that it looks real to her. The guy likely isn’t just sitting up looking around; they are holding his head up for photography purposes, just to document the injury. He’s been struck by, or hit his face on something; an explosion injury doesn’t look like that (she says).
The reason they didn’t/couldn’t provide more info is probably because somebody employed at the medical facility stole it, or illegally made a copy. - MC
I have not seen the pictures in question, but I have heard of this happening. I personally know of two people who have blown off a significant portion of their faces and survived. One was an attempted suicide by shotgun after killing his wife. Another was man who accidentally shot himself with his SKS rifle (that he was sleeping with). Both had serious injuries (the shotgun more than the rifle) and survived the initial injury at least. I know the man who shot himself with the rifle recovered almost fully. The man who shot himself with the shotgun was stable at the hospital waiting to be charged the last time I heard about him (I was at a new job it happened and haven’t checked).
I just read that the other day on snopes. The first two pictures were real, but they say it was probably a pig or something. The third picture where the snake was supposedly cut open was faked.
