Is the Pope standing in front of the Stars and Bars?

This photo struck me as odd. It appears that the pope is standing infront of a confederate flag. Can anyone tell me what that flag is?

Probably the flag of the State of Mississippi. You can also see the flag of Indiana on the left.

The flag on the left (not the one you mean, I realize) is the Indiana state flag. I’m guessing that the one on the right may be the flag of Mississippi, displayed at an angle which emphasizes the Confederate battle flag-inspired canton and de-emphasizes the stripes.

ETA: This message took a while to post, and Terminus Est’s contribution had not yet appeared when I previewed.

The reason why those flags are next to each other may be that they are part of a display of all the state flags in order of admission to the Union: Indiana was 19th, and Mississippi was 20th.

Stars and Bars: Confederate political flag, with some similarity to the Stars and Stripes.

Confederate Battle Flag: what most people have in mind when thinking “Confederate flag.”

Huh. The rednecks up here in Minnesota call the confederate battle flag the stars and bars. Who knew that rednecks could be such ignorant rubes?
and me for listening to them

If you watch the video on that page, you can see the whole flag. It’s definitely Mississippi.

You’re mistaking the Pope’s twin brother for the Pope himself. The family doesn’t like to talk about him, but as soon as he got all that white on he joined the Klan. Although their faces look exactly alike, he is distinguishable by his slightly smaller hat.
